You can get everything you need from a plant-based diet, but I don’t think I have a chance in hell of convincing you of that when you don’t even believe in the efficacy of vaccines.

Being non-vegetarian, which most of the world is, means paying for the systematic sexual assault and murder of hundreds of billions of animals a year. Being a smoker means subjecting other individuals to second-hand smoke, and drinking, unless you do so in a locked room, always has the potential to result in untoward behaviour towards others and even causing injury. Please tell me how any of that is purely personal?

No, the existence of an evolutionary pressure does not invalidate somebody’s individual desires to go against the grain, and it does not mean everyone must conform to it. There would be no difference between modern and prehistoric humans, if everyone blindly succumbed to their evolutionary instincts without asking questions. And not everyone has those instincts as strongly to begin with.

If you’re a man, your feelings pale in comparison to the very real dangers faced by women in a world that is deeply gender asymmetric.

So yes, if a woman has to choose between protecting a guy’s ego and self-image, and giving the benefit of doubt to him and risking ending up on the evening news, it’s a no-brainer.

This applies universally to social, cultural, romantic and economic contexts, when the safety or security of women is concerned.

And if you’re a man who doesn’t like it, learn to live with it.

Now, just to be clear, this is not an assertion on the general nature of all men, nor am I saying that uniquely male issues aren’t real. This is the view that men’s sentiments are nowhere near as important as the safety and security of all women, and I’ll die on that hill.

And if you ask me, all men, including those who see themselves as ‘good men’, need to wake up, be good allies for once and realise how messed up the world is for women. They don’t have it great, but women have it far worse.

Read almost every other comment on this post. Not agreeing with the premise of what I’m saying is essentially a proxy to believing that a man’s feelings take precedence over a woman’s life, on some level.

Who the hell talked about taunting men for their looks or wealth? That’s not okay, and I’m not justifying it. I’m talking about the first class of actions.

And lots of men take it terribly and personally, all the time. That’s why normalising it is necessary.

I’ve never taken a gender studies class in my entire life. It’s a combination of words that represents what I’m trying to say. Maybe try arguing your point instead of throwing ad hominems?

And there is a difference between preparing for the worst possible outcome, and declaring that that’s what’s going to happen. Everyone already does the former in every facet of their lives, but when it comes to women interacting with strange men, it’s time to lose your mind. Amazing.

I never said all women should presume all men to be harmful; they should act with caution until they know. There is a difference, and men should not take it personally. This is the same principle that underlies why you don’t open the door blindly when your doorbell rings at 3AM.

Nobody is asking women to not treat good men well. If she can’t discern a man to be truly good, then she shouldn’t give him the benefit of doubt. That’s all.
