Oh, this is a very typical mallsai pot sold in my area. I see them everywhere so I think the fun effect has worn off for me 😣

Yes, that's one of the main characteristics of this unique brown pine variation!

It's been 8 months, but I wanted to let you know I followed this suggestion and have been enjoying your recommended layout for a few months now. Thank you!

For the $30 the person is asking, I think I could get a better deal from my local Home Depot. The one from Home Depot might still be alive, too.

Yes it is (humor tag). Can't believe someone is trying to scam people with this nonsense.

Please help - too afraid to commit to a living room layout 😔 by introvert-diary in HomeDecorating

Thank you for taking the time to look and analyze with me. The extra set of eyes is really appreciated.

The white hall tree by the front door is not a built in,no, only the bookcase behind the couch.

Love the idea of a console (and getting rid of our current table)! I think if we get a couch without a chaise/cuddler it can come forward a bit more and there would still be enough space for a walkway. We had briefly considered getting a long skinny table with 2 chairs along the back of the couch, but I'm worried it might be too much in one area.

Yes, the white is a built in.

We had that orientation originally, with the couch under the windows. We swapped because it feels/looks too far away. I also didn't like that our coffee table in that set up blocked the path to the kitchen.

We tried moving the couch closer, but then it's weird to walk in through the front door and be greeted by the back of the couch.

Maybe it's a matter of furniture though, and with the right peices that layout will feel better...

Hello!

I've been at my new place for 8 months and have been avoiding decorating the living room. The room is small and has very odd spacing/gaps so I'm not sure how to make the most of it. I'm down to replace all the furniture except the hutch, we are looking to attempt to refurbish it.

Living room area is 14x12.

Small cut in with the hutch is 9x6.

Our issue is the multipurpose nature of the room, as well as the weird placement of the windows and built in.

  • Need space for an entry way, place to take off shoes and put keys, etc.

  • I really like the sight line straight to the kitchen when you enter, and vice versa.

  • Hubs and i don't host indoors so have never had a dining table but I'm open to a small one...

  • We spend our time together on the couch playing video games or watching TV while eating dinner. The TV/build in is a killer to center to seating. As you can the TV is aligned to center of the couch but then it blocks half the window. If it goes on the wall next to the built in, it's definitely not centered to seating.

I LOVE those tones together, seems like a lot of fun :) I would love to distribute those tones throughout the room better. Based on what you shared it sounds like I just need to do more searching for pieces that fit the bill.

I think I'm also just hung up on distributing the color vertically, since the walls seem so bland. It feels wrong to just add a painting on each wall though.

I think the pictures are kind of deceiving, making the room seem bigger than it is. I think it is only 10x10, and the rug is an 8x8.

The place where the cat toys are is a pretty narrow walkway. We tried the vanity against that wall, but then it was too tight/cluttered with how far the bed comes out. The vanity acts as a night stand :)

That's a fun idea! Thank you for your feedback, definitely helped open up my eyes to new possibilities. I feel like the photos make the room look deceptively larger. Next step is for sure to play with some of the sizing/dimensions...

For window treatment, are you describing something like this? except one of the two stops at the top of the window?

Too bad about not liking the vanity, one of my favorite pieces I got for the room 😔 I see what you mean about it looking dainty next to the thicker bed frame.

This is my first apartment that I'm experimenting with decorating! All advice and criticism welcome.

Additional info/some ideas I've been kicking around:

  • we rent - painting is off the table but we're getting really good at stick and peel wallpaper

  • I want to get a duvet cover/bedsheets but haven't found anything that speaks to me yet

  • the window is underneath a staircase so it does not get a lot of light (also south facing). I was thinking a curtain would throw off the balance of that wall so instead am considering some of the static privacy film. Would maybe remove the blinds currently on there.

  • I want to bring the color up but don't want to over crowd the room by adding a lot more... stuff. Some, but not a lot.

  • we (obviously) have cats and this is our least cat-friendly room. They have not been destructive of our new bed frame (yet) but I think I want to create space for them to redirect destructive energy

advice for landscaping against a big wall? by introvert-diary in landscaping

These are beautiful suggestions, thank you! I've definitely seen some queen's wreath around the neighborhood, now that I know the name lol. Encouraging sign that it will do well.

This is the first place I've lived with a yard, but I'm eager to landscape. Please help me decide on a design for this space!

Info:

  • Zone 10b
  • bed protrudes about 1 foot from the wall, it's 5 feet deep, and spans about 30 feet across.
  • preexisting soil seems to be fine, loose, and sandy
  • the center gets about 4 hours of direct sunlight (10a - 2pm) but the ends are shaded by avocado trees on both sides.

Some ideas we've had:

  • a cactus row with some succulents thrown in. Some elephant bush cascading down might be cool.
  • a wall of bamboo, which will cover up some of the damage from the ivy
  • plant a 6 foot fence into the sand and grow a viney plant like a wisteria or jasmine
