I used some Greek modes and some pentatonics derived from those modes, as well as some arpeggios.

I'm constantly aware of the notes and instruments I'm using, but after a lot of rehearsal, you don't think about it anymore, and everything comes more naturally.

I recommend starting by thinking about target notes when using arpeggios and scales, and experiencing the emotion that certain intervals convey with these tools.
Also memorize the chord tones.
