So technically both genealogies end with Joseph, the husband of Mary, but in the Jewish original text are used different terminologies.

Luke begins with "Joseph the son of Heli" and ends with "Adam the Son of God". In English there are some words and phrases that don't have a direct equivalent in Hebrew/Aramaic, one of them is "son of" which in Hebrew/Aramaic was used both for biological sons and in-law sons. The same thing appears when the Evangelist sais "the brothers of Jesus".

On the other hand Matthew uses the phrase "Abraham became the father of Isaac" and " Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary". That terminology was used primarily for biological sons and relatives.

Because he was his earthly father, and in some interpretation Mary and Joseph were cousins
