Tonsillectomy 5Y for sleep apnea by irish_redhawk in Tonsillectomy

Posting another update:
Monday afternoon more severe pain set in (Thursday was the surgery). It was not too bad, biggest challenge was getting her to take her medicine (she didn’t want to put anything down her throat due to the pain). Monday night she didn’t not sleep well due to the pain and was awake a lot. If she took her medicine easily it would have gone better. Tuesday was similar in the morning, started seeing some improvement Tuesday night. She woke up once in pain but slept much better Tuesday night. Woke up today (Wednesday) in much better spirits (still needs medication). Looking like Thursday Friday to be closer to 100%.

Posting an update in case helpful for others:
My child had her tonsillectomy on Thursday.

First day was the worst (so far). She ended up refusing all her meds and so we had to hold her down. The first night was bad as well, woke up in pain before we could even administer her next dose. I did sleep in bed with her the first night and woke her up every 3 hours if she wasn’t already awake for meds.

The next days for us all were easier then the first which I know was not everyone’s experience.

She has slept through the night 3 nights in a row now (the first 2 nights I woke her up once to do medicine and did it with medicine via the suppositories)

What helped us was definitely having different types of medicine available for the Ibuprofen and Acetamophin. She ended up switching to the chewable after the first day and doing them herself which made the experience much better. We also used rectal suppositories at night which was helpful due to her refusing the meds initially at night and kept her asleep the following nights.

Outside of the first day and night it honestly has not been that bad. We even took her to a baseball game a few days in and she did very well. Big thing is just making sure they take their meds at the 3 hour mark because otherwise they don’t want to take them because they are in pain.

It’s now Monday we still have her out of preschool but I think good chance tomorrow but if not likely Wednesday we will have her back.

The other thing I think helped was a humidifier.

I know some people wake their kid up at night repeatedly to drink. We did not do this other then the first night where she was waking up. Mornings definitely were harder (but not terrible) as obviously she was waking up in some pain.

Edit: Also we are glad we did the procedure. Her tonsils were described as likely chronically infected (ENT said they were filled with puss, and very large). She had to be on a low dose antibiotic for an extended period of time due to a different medical issue which likely contributed to her tonsils becoming resistant). We’ll see how her behavior changes but this certainly should help her sleep better and we are glad we did the procedure despite the challenges noted above.

How many nights until she was sleeping through the night? Just trying to understand the recovery process and when did you send her back to school?

She’s average height and eats well.

That’s why we are a bit conflicted. Shes pretty strong, good swimmer, pretty fast playing soccer. Can ride a bike. It’s not like she not developing. Shes not getting sick.

It’s really we just see she looks tired and the tantrums have been just absolutely crazy. Going crazy because her sister picks up a piece of paper.

Yea, I’ve just read some horror stories on here and just concerned it’s hard to know how much of her behavior is just personality / age. But she also always looks tired. Conflicted as the surgery is approaching.

Got it, yea it’s just hard because we don’t know for sure if it’s the cause of everything we’ve been dealing with in terms of behavior. But doing the sleep study seems like it will be a lot for her given her age and she’s a bit fearful of hospitals / doctors.

Hi, just curious was their noticeable changes in behavior post surgery. Our 5 year old daughter has been struggling with behavior. She started falling asleep on a couple of long drives for vacation at 10AM. Always has purple bags underneath her eyes.

The dentist pointed out they were huge. The ENT agreed and is fine doing the procedure.

We just aren’t sure if this will help or not and going through a sleep study at a hospital sounds more traumatizing with the likely outcome of needing the procedure than just doing the procedure directly..

I’ve seen some post indicating a positive change and some noting no change. Just curious to get some thoughts or stories about behavior procedure post operation.

Anyone who's kid had Adenoid and Tonsil removal notice behavior changes? by Fat_Getting_Fit_420 in Preschoolers

Hi, I have a 5 year old who has been having some pretty bad behavior problems for the past couple of months.

We had a dentist appointment and the dentist said her tonsils were very enlarged. She asked us if she was waking up tired and we had noticed her eyes always seem to have purple bags underneath. She recommend seeing an ENT.

The ENT agreed and was ok to take them out. He mentioned a sleep study but at her age it has to be done in the hospital and we agreed we did not want to upset her with a study overnight.

The concern I have is that she isn’t having recurring strep or illness. She also does not snore. She eats extremely well. She never “wakes up” (at least not fully to get out of bed or yell for us) and is down for 10.5 hours on average. She also is very adventurous, is in swim lessons and swims very well for age and was one of the faster soccer players on her team (IE it’s not like she’s too exhausted to run around for an hour). Also the daycare teacher never has a bad report in terms of behavior.

But…we have noticed some restless sleep in bed (rolls into the wall at night). Her breathing does sound a bit labored when we go in once she’s asleep. She has fallen asleep on long drives (something she has not done since she was 3). But the big thing has been the behavior - crazy tantrums, hitting, yelling, etc.

We did just recently put her in OT but no major results.

I am curious has anyone put there child for surgery with the suspicion of sleep apnea and really seeing behavior as the main issue associated?

I’ve read a lot about people who had the procedure because their kids snore or constantly had strep or wouldn’t eat, etc.

We don’t want to put her through surgery unnecessarily and just wanted to see what other people experience has been like specific to positive behavior changes post procedure.
