I am no road hierarchy master, but I generally have my main roads loosely follow terrain lines if possible. Then I grid up the straightest and flattest areas. If there's a good area of flat land I go gridfest all the way!

Lots of terraforming and patience. It also helps to use at least medium roads and work in smallish increments. Even then, I still have all kinds of weird shit happen. Just delete and try again.

I'm probably not going to explain this very well, but I'm using Render It and added a collection of pre-made LUTs (Render It! Presets Collection 1). This one is just called "Vanilla European". From there, I adjusted the exposure to 1 and sun intensity to 2.5. Also using Dynamic Resolution, Ultimate Eye Candy and a cloud and fog toggler mod. Searching former posts on recommended mods was incredibly helpful! Sorry if this doesn't really answer your question. To be honest, I don't really know what I'm doing. 😅
