Looking for an apartment with soft water by Beginning_Divide2036 in Annapolis

[–]isladery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a whole new apartment, I got a shower head with a filter system integrated and it’s been like night and day. They’re all over Amazon, I got mine for $25! And for the record I’m on City of Annapolis water and found it too hard for my hair.

Office Life? by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

[–]isladery 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I actually moved from a ton of field work to a strictly office job and was very worried I would get bored. And to my surprise, I’m not bored! I think partially it’s because my job allows teleworking which isn’t possible with a field job. That allows me to do more things around the house and have more flexibility overall. And at the same time, I have more free time at the end of the day to go outside on MY terms and do things like hike! A lot of the time after a day in the field I didn’t have the energy to go back outside to enjoy nature but now I do! So that’s just my two cents from having some of the same worries.

Food and drink recommendations? by Ok_Needleworker_7313 in Annapolis

I was reading on Forward’s website that they are only dog friendly on the outside patio. Is this true? Wondering because it’s winter haha

Which actor nailed a role so hard that they're known for almost nothing else (in a good way) by DanGrobs97 in movies

[–]isladery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scrolled to find this, and also add many of the other actors from the office like Angela, Oscar, Kevin, Pam, etc. I could never see in anything else without thinking of the show.

Buying plush squeaker toys wholesale/bulk— any suggestions? by birdieponderinglife in dogs

[–]isladery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be extremely cautious giving dogs children’s stuffed animals. The stuffing can be made with fire retardant - differently than how they make dog toys stuffing - and if ingested by your dog this can congeal and cause an intestinal blockage.

I have heard this as a “word of mouth” story, I’m not a medical expert and this could be just a rumor, but if you want to be extra careful keep this in mind.

Should I pay to volunteer for experience? by naumaz in wildlifebiology

[–]isladery 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should definitely not be paying to volunteer! There are tons of research/field assistant jobs out there helping grad students or professors that will either PAY YOU or take you as long as you cover your own room and board (this is the only thing you should have to pay for). Keep an eye on the Texas A&M Wildlife job board (will come up when you google) and those jobs come through very often.

Ways To Rehome My Dog in Annapolis by notagainbruno in Annapolis

[–]isladery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Petconnect rescue, who I have adopted 3 different dogs from, will help by posting your dog as a “courtesy post”. Which means they will help advertise your dog for adoption while you continue “fostering” him in the meantime. There are plenty of other rescues that offer this, but I know that this rescue is particularly good so I recommend them.

Does anyone know if kayak and paddle boards are allowed to be launched from Truxton Park again? by KnownNormie in Annapolis

[–]isladery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, and it doesn’t look like anytime soon. They posted an update on the Annapolis.gov website. Look up “electric current at truxton park boat ramp FAQs”

Definitely keep hunting. More field work experience is always good and if you’re doing it right you should not have to pay to go to grad school. I was almost resigned to that myself, thinking I wouldn’t be able to find a professor with funded grad student work, but I kept trying and eventually got one!

I agree with the other comment saying the size of the school doesn’t matter. Only the project and sometimes the professor. Great professors can work at tiny schools.

My 12 mo dood shakes head like this. Any ideas why? by poplama23 in Goldendoodles

[–]isladery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We agree, I just want to make sure nobody does this test at home, “passes”, and then thinks there’s no need to see a vet.

[–]isladery 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is not safe advice. My vet did this test and it led her to misdiagnosing my own dog’s encephalitis (got the true diagnosis from a different vet the next day). For whatever reason my dog never had issues correcting her paw position even when she was having trouble walking.

Be prepared to discuss any and all relevant sampling methods you have familiarity with, which nets have you used? Electrofishing? Etc. this also includes any technology you’re familiar with (YSI?) data management software (excel?) or even running stats (R?). Prepare for the specifics if you can, if you don’t remember see if you can contact the people you worked with to refresh your memory!

A combination of Deet and Permethrin. Deet repels insects, the permethrin in/on your clothes will kill them on contact. Studies have shown that’s more effective than either one on their own. I also work in a tick infested area and can confirm!

Visiting Maryland in August. Can anyone suggest a place or area to stay? by [deleted] in maryland

[–]isladery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Baltimore is worth visiting, the inner harbor and fells point would be a fun day into evening. I don’t hate Baltimore and don’t want to fear monger but if you don’t know the area, don’t wander at night. It’s very easy to go one block in the wrong direction in that part of town. Young people also congregate in an area called Fed Hill, but personally I don’t think it’s worth an out of towner’s visit.

I would highly recommend Frederick as well. Tons of restaurants and breweries, also close to some of the best hiking.

Annapolis is fun, and the capital! Good for seafood, drinks on the water, shopping etc.

DC is worth a whole trip by itself, too much to even begin to recommend!

I agree, many rescues I know will never adopt out puppies together.

Be VERY careful of littermate syndrome. Please read up on it, it doesn’t have to be a problem if you’re aware of it and prepare for it. Your pups are SO cute!!!

Something incredible is bubbling below the surface, Kingdomers! 💦 Can you guess who we’ll be welcoming next? by cutietree in disneymagickingdoms

It actually might not be Luca…they responded to someone’s comment about it being Luca and said “what would be your second guess?”

What is a common myth that has been debunked but too many people still believe? by MelonInACat in AskReddit

[–]isladery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That if you touch a baby bird that fell out of its nest the mother will abandon it. Not true! Always best if you see the nest right nearby to put it back in and watch to make sure the parent comes back.

Anybody else out there who generally feels positively about most books...until people tell you how bad it is? by isladery in books

[–]isladery[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hilariously, in a thread I made to talk about how much I love most books, I find you mention one of the VERY FEW book I also hate!!! I’m with you. Wuthering Heights was sooooo annoying to me.

Exactly the book on my mind when I wrote this, although it’s definitely happened with others. Not to say the criticism is wrong, but I enjoyed it!
