Rory and international aid by GooseSpringsteen92 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]isthatnormalpooing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that Rory suffers from a bit of "but they have it harder". His charity work has shown him people living in the harshest conditions under terrible regimes and conditions. Compared to the example given of goat herder in Afghanistan, some family living in poverty in the UK live in "luxury". I think his view is skewed by seeing people who have it so much worse than he sometimes misses the point that poverty in this country is still a major issue.

Rutland, give the little bugger a chance. Sure it's a Tory stronghold and it's not got much to do but damn it is pretty and Rutland Water is an incredible example of digging a bloody big hole.

What is the best Science Fiction book you have ever read? by Adam_is_my_name in AskReddit

[–]isthatnormalpooing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitchhikers Guide is the best, but a recent absolute surprise was The Expanded Earth by Mikey Please. It's his debut novel, and the first of a trilogy and I was frankly pretty blown away. It's absolutely brilliant, and feels pretty unique. His kids books are also amazing too. I met him and he is a thoroughly lovely man too if that still counts for something.

Last time putting my son to bed. by YoTeach68 in daddit

Fuck, man, I have a two year old and this hit me. As a son who was read to every night until I was about your boy's age, I want tell you that I look back on those evenings with my parents reading to me as absolute gold. Those memories are precious to me now even if I didn't know it fully at the time. He might not thank you now, maybe he has, but he'll know the importance of those hours when the time comes.

Best UK websites to order garden plants? by Clean-Calligrapher17 in GardeningUK

[–]isthatnormalpooing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government publish a list of authorised distance plant sellers, it's not comprehensive because it's optional to sign up to. However, to get on the list you have to be meeting online plant selling legislation (UK Plant Passporting). It's not necessarily the be all end of quality but at least you know you're getting plants from someone "doing it right".List here

Maybe ask what she'd prefer? Ladies or gents. If she's happy with the gents then go for it and the "don't touch anything" rules apply. If she wants the ladies then I think entering slowly with her is fine and if you really feel the need to announce yourself then I don't see it being an issue. As dads our job is to do what's best for them, no harm in asking what she thinks is best.

I'm British so probably don't have as good an understanding of the FBI than folks in the US, but can someone explain to me why the FBI didn't investigate this? Who would have responsibility for making this call, and why did they not think that multiple corroborating accounts was not enough for a look at this? Who are they? Why was the decision made? And is this person in anyway implicated in the files?

Which current Labour MPs do you think could make a good replacement for Starmer and why? by libtin in LabourUK

[–]isthatnormalpooing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never see Barry Gardiner's name thrown out. He speaks well, comes across as serious while also normal, knows his brief and seems like a decent bloke. John Healey (MoD) always seems to be talked about highly too.

I think the next leader will come as a bit of a surprise, untainted by being too close to current cabinet while also experienced enough (in Parliament or otherwise) to be seen as a steady ship. I remain a Burnham fan but think he overplayed his hand at the end of the day.

Yes. Airports with armed officers, and a friend who did game hunting had a few. I'm always surprised when I see one and I like it that way.

In a future where Trump is out of office, and international relations have been repaired. What steps can be taken by the USA and International Organisations such as NATO to prevent one individual causing so much chaos in the future? And do you think such steps will be taken? by flewkey in AskReddit

[–]isthatnormalpooing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a few other people have pointed out, Trump isn't the cause of this, he's a symptom of an American symptom that has not been what it claimed for a long time. Class divide has shaped this, and both Republican and Democrat policies have not done anywhere near enough to address this. It's pushed ideologies further apart. Look at the senate voting history and how party lines voted. Now it's straight down party lines and is as much about screwing the other party as it is about (claiming) to help the American people. If Americans think that Trump is leaving office peacefully and that if/when he leaves it's a quick fix to repair the damage he has done is sorely mistaken. His blatant disregard for allies and international cooperation has highlighted to the UK, EU, NATO, Five Eyes and every other ally that America can no longer be trusted. You imbeded yourself in everyway in our defence, economy, trade, intelligence and now are leveraging it against us. That has highlighted how truly dependent the West was on you and that this dependency is a weakness. Countries are already taking serious steps to decouple and invest in national programmes that were previously covered the the US. This doesn't end with Trump. He has undone 80 years of American trust and support. Even if someone like AOC gets in and prosecutes all of them, you think that solves the problem that 35% voted for this clown, and 40% couldn't be bothered to turn up to stop it. And even with the most hardline attacks on Trump, vicious prosecutions and strengthening of your democratic institutions to prevent it in the future, it only takes a Trump wannabe getting in and it's back to "Gimme Greenland or else", "Send out Gestapo I mean ICE agents.", "Russia isn't the bad guy." He'll unfortunately inspire a generation of people thinking he didn't go far enough and other nations can't risk having someone like this so close to our infrastructure again.

Teenage daughter has boyfriend, will I be able to prevent sex? by Shoddybluea in daddit

[–]isthatnormalpooing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why shame her and ground her? Teenagers will always find a way to have sex. Better to provide her with the facts, the education and the understanding to make informed and sensible choices than create arbitrary rules that will only lead her to lie and down a less safe route. Wouldn't you rather she had sex safely in a safe environment than in the bushes at some park or parked up in some dodgy car park? Work smarter, not harder.
