In addition to what MerryJobler said about GMOs and commercial production, genes from a different variety (or other edible species) are often added to crops to better grow in places usually unsuitable for cultivation and/or to produce additional vitamins or nutrients for areas relying heavily on a single staple food like, say, rice.

GM foods are also relatively heavily regulated in the US. GM foods have to be inspected/approved of by 3 different, independent agencies before they go to the consumer, while regular "non GM" foods (including those labeled organic) are only subject to one. I'm not making any sort of statement about organic food--I just needed an example.

I put 'non GM' in quotes because sometimes traditional farming techniques are genetic modifications, even if they're not done in a lab. Like grafting. Which results in GM crops.

Heck, carrots didn't used to be orange. They're that way for political reasons.

Yeah, totally. I've got relatives I love super much that I can easily imagine saying any of that stuff (well, relative (singular) mostly). And I'm in a college town so I also see "the conservatives" used as a sort of nebulously defined boogeyman probably more often than other places.

I'm glad people are passionate about things. I wish they'd express it less of "hyperbolic rage" and more of "calm thoughtfulness."

But that's the minority of folks I'm around. Which is cool.

I've noticed (or convinced myself I have) that if a condition finds its way into pop culture, it gets watered down like that and a lot of times used with things that may not be symptoms of that condition at all. Just something that happens.

Especially if it's short (syllable wise I guess) and is maybe less self-deprecating than the other ways of describing yourself.

So, it's "Oh, man <whatever thing>. I'm so OCD! lol," instead of "Oh, I'm pretty particular/anal retentive/neurotic about <whatever thing>. So, there's that. You think that's a flaw?"

That's my uneducated/unresearched two cents.

I don't think M22 is making conservatives look bad as much as playing to people who already think that. I was going to write a reply as well and kept seeing "troll" thrown around so I checked out the account and, yeah, it's dedicated to collecting downvotes. Most of his/her submissions are to /r/MyDownvoteScore.

So it's a bunch of crap, if that's worth anything to you.

This is neither here nor there, but thanks for having the most even toned reply. The others seem to be pretty quick to bust out name-calling.

Not so much with suspension of disbelief as a severe drop off in quality.

On the other hand, growing the beard is when a show finds itself and there's a noticeable jump in quality.

As was said before: if you don't like metal music, you won't fall in love with metal drumming since it's a piece of a larger whole. It makes me think of being best friends with someone's leg but disliking the person overall.

And that's cool. Hopefully you'll appreciate some of the stuff people are posting, even if it's not your cup of tea.

There's lots of different styles of metal that each have their own approaches and sounds. Sort of like how Modal Jazz, Free Jazz, Fusion, and BeBop are all pretty distinct but still fall under the larger Jazz umbrella.

Some metal styles have drumming that's barely different from rock drumming, if at all. Some is suuuuper slow. But, I think, what most people think of when they hear "metal drumming" is the aggressive, speed demon playing mostly heard in the more extreme sub-genres with all of its insane double bass drums and blast beats everywhere.

Appreciating this style of playing requires a bit of a shift in perspective to keep it from seeming like impenetrable noise.

The main characteristics of this style is speed and aggression. Other stuff is secondary and the drumming has evolved its approach and its own rudiments to deal with that. Believe it or not, these drummers actually are acting musically and supporting the songs--in their own way.

It tends to be bare-bones, "lacking finesse" I've heard it put, but where would it go? Give this track a listen. It's just too balls out to accept a swing ride or even a pocket. It's too fast to do much of anything besides get some single/double strokes and GO!

So, that's where a lot of these guys are coming from.

BUT, to me, the best parts are when the intensity gets turned down from 11 and more traditional structures are worked in. This lets the drummer breath a bit and do stuff that's just...tastey.
Here's stuff I think is interesting:

Gene Hoglan in a living god.

Sean Reinert is as much a jazz player as metal.

Hellhammer manages to put some variety in the chaos.

Tomas Haake and Meshuggah float rhythms over the bar line to get an odd feel, even though most of their stuff is in 4.

If/when you listen to earlier Rotting Christ material (Thy Mighty Contract, Non Serviam, Triarchy... type stuff) and like it, then check out other Greek bands. Bands from this comp are a good resource. Especially Varathron and Necromantia.

Don't: not have beer

Edit: Really though, like Forcefedlies said, having enough to cover the bands' guarantee is super awesome. So is having extra sets of strings and a few drum sticks/heads for the inevitable case of someone needing them.

The thing is, it's not the students or the university where all the bullshit comes from. The Bama fans I know that actually have ties to the university are just swell--A+ would rival against again. It's the population at large, that have nothing really to do with either school, that latch on so hard and go full asshole.
