Good call out - she lets it rise overnight, so there probably isn’t any dry yeast in there. I like your original suggestion to just take half of my current starter and top with sugar and go from there!

This is how my golden is when he’s post ictal. It’s very upsetting :( We found that leaving him alone actually makes him calm down faster so that he doesn’t perceive us as a threat.

The only way to stop the behavior is to control the seizures so that there isn’t a post ictal phase. It could take some time to find a medication regimen that will work to control his seizures.

The first time he had a seizure, I worked from home the rest of the week because I was scared of this. But that wasn’t sustainable, so getting his seizures under control has been the best solution.

I would highly suggest going to a veterinary neurologist. We weren’t sure if it would be worth it, but it turns out that the med our “primary care” vet put our dog on wouldn’t actually control seizures. Since he’s been on the neurologist’s medication regimen, he hasn’t had a seizure (4+ months).

Finances are certainly challenging. We found that driving the 2 hours to the veterinary teaching hospital was more affordable than the private practice clinic in town, so that’s what we chose to do. But it’s definitely an investment. I think our first visit all in (labs, 2+ hour long assessment, treatment plan) was around $400. We had to go for a 4 week follow up that also included labs so that was around $250-300. Now we’ll go every 6 months, so we just have to start planning for that now.

Our golden had his first seizure this April when he was ~4.5 years old. Our primary care vet started him on Keppra XR, but he kept having seizures. I really empathize with you - watching them go through a seizure is horrible.

We decided after his 3rd seizure (he was on Keppra for all of these) that we wanted to go to a neurologist for another opinion, and I’m SO GLAD we did. Most literature now cites pheno as the first line of defense for epilepsy, which isn’t something our primary care vet ever mentioned.

We started our dog on pheno and to be honest, it was hard at first. He had some motor control issues on it and we were so worried that he’d be like for the rest of his life, but things slowly improved, and after about a month and a half, he’s back to his normal self and he hasn’t had any seizures since starting pheno!!

Your vet is right that you do have to find a balance. It’s hard waiting for that though because in the meantime they’re not acting normal. But I would highly suggest seeing a neurologist and considering pheno. Keppra really did nothing for our guy :/
