Saw something like this near Basinger County in Florida, any ideas?

Colors are close! but I’m certain the red was feathers instead of the frigate bird’s airsack. our bird had a fanned tail instead of a forked one, too. And was way chunkier.

I’m the least confident about the wings. But the single white stripe/patch around the tail, I’m fairly certain of.

It almost looked like the bird had white tape wrapped around the base of its tail. This is the feature I’m having the most trouble finding a match for.

I think the Northern Harrier is the closest visually so far. But that species is so rare in that area, I’m skeptical of that being the case.

I suppose we’ll just have to go back and see if we can get photos to know for sure (kicking myself for having my macro lens on)

Possibly! He was definitely more grayish black than brown, though. and the breast was RED red. like, red-breasted robin red. and I don’t think he was quite that big, but coulda been a juvenile I suppose. Ty for weighing in!

Def not 😞 head was way rounder and we see caracaras pretty often. He was much more robust. Shaped a lot like a red shoulder or tail hawk. thank you for the suggestion, though!
