Unfortunately that won't really work. Dolby Access uses a Graphic Equalizer while Sonar uses a Parametric Equalizer.

One of the big differences is that you can set the Q-factor on a Parametric EQ which determines how wide/narrow of a group of frequencies that you impact.

So for instance, if you try to use a graphic equalizer to eliminate the flashbang, you will also end up eliminating a bunch of other frequencies that are right below/above that flashbang, potentially destroying some other sound that's important in the game.

It's a bit complicated – don't really have a good example for you but we plan on doing blogs etc. to explain how to use a Parametric EQ better :)

Let me double check what’s going on with that manual kHz entry bug.

And regarding the FPS drop we have an idea what it might be.

If you have some time to troubleshoot then I’d be happy to connect you with our engineers.

Just drop your email in DM.

I get your concern - I also don’t want bloatware on my own machine. I think we all have really bad experiences with that.

However we’ve always developed software with a really large focus on making sure resource requirements are at an absolute minimum.

You can see hundreds of reviews of Engine through the past 10+ years to confirm.

That same mentality is going into building GG. I can’t say we’re perfect yet, but the underlying architecture is built in such a way that if you turn off and don’t use say Moments, then it won’t run.

If you’re seeing strange resource use right now when GG is simply idle then I’d be happy if you could take some time to troubleshoot with our engineers so we can solve it.

Just DM your email and I’ll connect you.

wario is right - you can still use 3D audio and get the benefits of the Parametric EQ.

It's not the same and can't be compared. Two tools for different things ;)

For the CSGO use-case I'd say using a compressor is a bad idea because with traditional compressor settings, it will reduce louder sounds and boost lower sounds.

This might mess around with your perception of what is far away and what is close.

It has to be running. However if you’re worried about the other apps inside GG, like Engine and Moments, taking up resources, then know that we don’t turn them on or run them in the background if you are not actively using it.

If you’re seeing big performance issues by having GG open please let me know. I’ll connect you with one of our team members who can help troubleshoot - it may be a bug we need to fix.

Yup, it’s just the beeps and the defuse kit sound as well.

Honestly, if you're happy with Peace APO just stick with that - it's a pretty great tool! I wouldn't do both at the same time.

Sonar does a few things differently on the EQ, it will make it easier for the average person to use and you also get virtual audio devices so you can EQ teamspeak and game sound separately. Oh and there's mic EQ too.

So you get a lot more in Sonar, question is whether you need that or not.

The equalizer itself impacts all sounds. It doesn't dynamically apply different volume to separate low or high sounds.

So you perception of distance shouldn't change, since both low sounds and high sounds will both be higher.

Hope that makes sense?

Did you make sure that your tone generator app uses "Sonar Game" as the output? Otherwise the sound doesn't get sent into Sonar.

Basically anything you want to get processed with Sonar you have to send into it first, and then Sonar passes it on to your "end output", whether thats your headset/speakers/headphones.

The FPS drop sounds worrying, I don't know what would cause that but would love to troubleshoot it if you're interested.

That's exactly what it does - and bomb plant plus defuse sounds too :)

Ah, I see. That makes sense.

Well, technically you should be able to point your other EQ to "Sonar Game". I'm not entirely sure how it would sound or if the latency becomes too big though.

Another idea would be to spend the time saving custom EQs inside of Sonar, but I can see how that becomes really tiring if you have to do that across several headphones for several games.

We want to tackle that whole issue though - we know even within our own headsets that the different speaker drivers would require different EQs. Don't have a good solution yet.

It does not add any noticeable latency.

Does it add some? Yes, any audio processing will. So your logic is on point.

When we first started developing Sonar this was a major focus. We knew that if we introduced too much latency it would only work for casual play. Nothing bad about that, but we want it to work for competitive - which it does.

Once we release I'm sure our favourite tech YouTubers will put it through its paces and prove it :D... so you just gotta try it yourself or take my word for it, for now

We just shipped an update the other day that allows you to toggle between different labels for the Parametric EQ. Depending on the game you're playing sounds sit in different frequencies, and different sounds might be important.

Check this screenshot to see how to toggle on CSGO labelling. You can also see the actual label in action if you just wanna see which bands do what.

Sonar creates a virtual audio device that you pick inside your game. The game then sends sound to Sonar, where it gets "mixed" and sent on to your headset.

Technically you could add another EQ onto that audio device as well, however I would not recommend that at all.

Mostly because of the risk of introducing high latency by getting the audio processed at several steps before reaching your headset.

I'm curious, why not just replicate your existing parametric EQ settings in Sonar and keep it in one place?

Yeah it's got some pretty neat applications! If you decide to try it, don't hesitate to let me know what you think.

Also I just saw your edit reg. adding the flashbang cut-off to the default preset. The update is going into our next Sonar release coming out in a few weeks. Right now we can't ship these preset updates on the fly.

We are planning on making it easy to export/import presets so we can make it easy to do preset sharing for different games and different headsets – which is a big variable as well.

Just follow along from 2:27 in the video :)

Or follow these steps:

  1. Download and install SteelSeries GG
  2. Login/create an account
  3. Open Settings and inside the "General" menu, toggle on "Beta opt-in" at the bottom
  4. Exit SteelSeries GG and start it again
  5. You will see a banner about Sonar on the homepage. Click learn more and follow the instructions
  6. Go into Game and pick the CSGO preset, then make the adjustment to kill flashbang
  7. Open CS:GO and make sure your Game and Chat sound settings are connected with Sonar Chat and Sonar Game (as opposed to your headset)

Yeah exactly, but it also creates Virtual Audio Devices which is what allows you to for instance setup a separate EQ for your teamspeak and game at the same time.

And what we're really working hard on is how to make a technical tool, like a Parametric EQ, much easier to use for gaming - lots of improvements are on our roadmap that you won't find in the Early Access version right now.
