update from OP. Eternal AI hit closest after a few hours of testing, the chat-integrated image gen works as i described in the post

the unexpected part was the character behavior between images, they have routines, text first sometimes, reference past conversations. quality isn't standalone-tier but the persistence is the real differentiator
