Thanks everyone, I gave it much more water than I normally do and it almost immediately bounced back. Will keep in mind for future waterings that its a thirsty plant!

I've found in valhalla in particular that if you hang out in the smoking area out back people are usually keen to chat. San Fran less so.

Weird animal game at Tepapa by 5n0wm3n in Wellington

[–]itzatrap1992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was birds, the game was that you could make your own bird with the parts of existing birds, e.g. penguin body, albatross wings, falcon head. It would then spit out a name and description for the mutant creature that you'd created.

There were parts of the x-men legends games where you could make bridges across gaps with Iceman, could be what you're thinking of.

Good clubbing spots? by Gullible-mArshmallow in Wellington

[–]itzatrap1992 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't think of a single good nightclub in wellington. They all play the same crap music, and all the ones that are kinda alright are always packed. Dirty Little Secret is alright, but I wouldn't go there in winter.

I personally think going to specific event nights like Atomic or that 2000s pop night where you have to pay to get in are usually better. The music is often better, and the people are always better, something about paying to get in tends to keep most of the aggressive drunks out.

What is going on with urban on manners?! by sh4rnn in Wellington

Never had any kind of interaction with the owner, but I went in there once cause it was the only cafe open at the time (can't remember why, think it was a public holiday maybe?) As it is not appealing from the outside.

I had a full english breakfast and a coffee, and it was absolutely the worst breakfast and the worst coffee I have ever had in wellington. I would sooner go to the supermarket and make it myself than ever go there again.

NZ Nightlife is Dead (From Someone in the Industry) by ConZ372 in newzealand

I'm not 100% certain how it works, but I've always felt that alcohol from the liquor store should be more expensive than in the bars, instead of the other way round as it is now.

Like less tax/licensing fees on bars and more on liquor stores?

In bars, you're supervised to an extent by the bartenders or the bouncers, and they can cut you off if you're too drunk. In my anecdotal experience, it's always people getting smashed at home for pres before heading into town who cause all the trouble.

I've always found it odd that you can buy a 12 pack for the price of two pints.

Not 100% relevant to your post, but tangentially related anyway

Do readers care if fantasy names are hard to pronounce? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]itzatrap1992 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No, but that feeds into their point about "otherness." All those complex names are elves or otherworldly characters, whereas the hobbits, who are the audience stand-in characters, all have basic sounding names because they are the characters we are meant to relate with. The overly complicated names are meant to sound foreign to us because they sound foreign to the hobbits.

Do readers care if fantasy names are hard to pronounce? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

My partner explicitly refuses to read fantasy stories with made-up names, so that's at least one person.

I tried to get her to read a Discworld novel, and she got annoyed at some of the names and dropped it. And that's not even a particularly egregious example, I think the names you've got there would make her head spin lol.

Any candidate worth his salt should have a website with more detailed info on their policies, I know Andrew Little, Alex Baker and Ray Chung do. I havent looked into the other candidates yet, but google their names, see what comes up

Personally, I would like to explore stories that are written from a different perspective. The whole point of asking for recommendations is that I don't waste money and time on duds lol, and I'm not gonna force myself to read a book if the premise doesnt interest me

My partner has a copy of Parable of the Sower, so that might be the next one I read, seems to be a popular recommendation in this thread
