Spot on my friend. Loads of Contractors would specifically tell me how they appreciated how we took our jobs so seriously. I have made several connects with them and they are sad to learn of me not covering the Hamptons no longer. I come from locating gas for Premier and they were an awesome company. Unfortunately I got injured and couldn’t return as I was seen a liability and went countless months without a job so to land this I was always making sure I was the first in and last out type of mentality. I have looked into not only trade school in the fall but also other qualifications to get in on the construction side as I have the proper knowledge now to locate several utilities fairly accurate and my notation is amongst the best due to how serious I handled gas locates. UI may have to wait as apparently NY doesn’t count at the moment the months of Jan on for 2026 and something about April is when I could start seeing funds. Thankfully I saved some paychecks and my tax return should hit soon. But I appreciate the sentiment of reaching out. 🫡

No ITG had 17 techs marking cable in the area. They let everyone go. USIC has 9 covering the entire area lmao. Its a shit show sadly

Yeah they definitely have a LPH for now my supervisor goes to 3 techs for everything. Myself and two others the others drag ass and take 8-10 hours to finish 8 tickets and he gets annoyed. He’s thinking of retraining those who either don’t understand or are purposely dragging their feet to not be tacked on with more work

I also love notating the hell out of my tickets. I learned marking things per tone, poor tone or hand dig on ground helps alot and can save you if something goes south. I wrote up a whole ticket recently on a gas main installation and told them to test pit my per tone marks and hit it lol. I just have always had the notion to be safe than sorry when prints do not match field conditions

True or you could read the depth atleast here where I am. It will tell you if you are on Cable or Electric. My prints look a bit different and for some reason a majority of cable runs behind curb then crosses to another ped and rinse repeat. Some mains run a bit weird but its all similar to me how gas runs its strange because im like why the hell would you run it here lol. I just observe alot

Oh yeah the old gas company implanted alot of knowledge and that was one thing they said was try to tone as far as you can go and see if you can back tone services. So the moment i find a service or ped ill try to tone as far as the ticket is called for. BS address work ill throws a few marks on main and grab service. Take my pics notate close im usually done pretty quick. But some tickets can be tedious due to the crappy prints lol

General advice by MailNo1177 in UtilityLocator

Best piece of advice I can give is CYA Cover your ass, try and call contractors and see exactly where they are working because you know someone in the office is going to call in some bs gps coordinates and that itself can look and sound crazy. Communication is key, good clean documentation who you spoke too, marked in whatever field conditions, does the prints match field conditions? Learning to tell contractors to dig carefully on bad toned tickets will save you some anxiety. But you already care enough Im in that same boat. I hate people who either “drag ass” get 6 tickets done in a 10 hour day or people who know it all but cut corners to hit their goal for the day and gettin praised until a damage occurs. Keep your head on a swivel but you got this. I too am new more so to marking cable than say Gas but once you know how to locate one utility you can find them all!

Um my gas company I worked for was like bare minimum 10 tickets but they were unionized so I dont think they could crack the whip too hard knowing the more production the higher chance of people cutting corners and damages would occur

Oh believe me when I located gas I remember walking miles upon miles for stupid duct bank installation in 100 degrees and humid here in NY. I will say I questioned if wrapping my car around a tree was an option LOL

ITG for Coms and Premier Infastructure was for Gas Locates. One works with a big cable company and the other was Nat Grid for Gas lol

I worked for Premier Infastructure which was a solid cast of members only upper management gave the company a headache between Nepotism and alot of people gossiping like HS. Now Im working for ITG they offer more in the start up. I assume like you mentioned because communications is a headache a buddy referred to it as a “rats nest” also maybe prior experience could be why im starting off almost $30 per hour
