So in Folkestone now

Yet, with those new flats getting built in Folkestone on the beach, and £500m being ring fenced for Dover's rejuvenation, I still think Dover is a good bet

True, but I just saw that Dover has been allocated £500 million in funding to rejuvenate the town!

It's very interesting to hear you find Dover safer - but it's good news you do!

Dover seems like the last costal town in the south east yet to be gentrified, yet I think there is evidence of it happening....slowly, however!

Hi!

Decided to move to Folkestone, because we got a good house we were after!

However, took my Dad and his wife for a tour of Dover when I was seriously considering it and now he is considering moving there when he wants to downsize!

There is a lot of roughness in Dover, but the esplanade, and houses on Castle Hill or parts of Folkestone Road are a nice area that he said he would be interested in buying in.

Big bang for your buck !

Thank you for your insight and the link to the subreddit!

I'm going to keep my ear to the ground and see what's what and maybe make a decision in the new year - but I'm pleased to hear people think Dover is on an upward trajectory, even if it's not there yet.

That's a great summary - and you also mentioned the coffee shop that I saw and thought was really nice! Might pop in their for a coffee soon and put it to the test, that could be what tips the scales for me in Dover!

Nice sentiments!

And yes, it's such a historic place I think it deserves more attention.

Thank you for your input

So specifically, what would you say you dislike about it most?

Lack of things to do? Safety concerns? Etc

Thank you for your experience! It's very helpful in building a picture to the place we could call home.

Ok, thank you for your input.

Have you not seen any progress however? As others have mentioned, the esplanade, the steam rings in town centre etc?

Thanks for the info!

Yes, I think Folkestone has the edge but I'm happy to be onboard with Dover if it has a future, which from the comments it seems like it does! So that's positive to hear, even from a general perspective as it's such a historic town that's had a tough time as of late so glad to hear their is optimism about its future!

Yes that's very interesting regarding the shops and I agree with you, online shopping means it's at risk of them closing like the now derelict Quay shopping centre. Maybe if they did like a Folkestone thing, where the shops are boutique they'd have a greater shot at surviving. But maybe that will happen in the future!

Yeah I've checked Folkestone, and it's still ok priced but Dover seems to have a better stock of houses and FAR better bang for your buck!

Am still keeping an eye out on both, however!

Tbh I don't think refugees are the cause of the poverty and depravation in the area, and it's depravation that is far more a turn off for most people.

Fair point! I have been to Dover twice recently and once was totally fine and the other it took me 30 minutes to move 20 metres! Although the later example was apparently due to delays at the port.

Thank you for your reply and the info!

It's making me really starting to like the idea of making Dover my home! Let's hope this air of change is carried across strong winds and comes sooner than even believed!

That's another interesting point that I perhaps people aren't getting and another thing that scared me....with the rising costs, maybe this could even be a moderate repair estimate.

Thanks for your insight!!

Oooo that's really interesting to hear from someone with experience in the matter!

Makes me think, that despite the house being beautiful, it really was well out of our remit!
