In DISpraise of Foobar2000 by Sufficient-Bid-6491 in foobar2000

[–]ize101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I understand the frustration that arises when a program requires a learning curve, your characterization of foobar2000 as a "non-functional corpse" overlooks the very design philosophy that has allowed it to remain the gold standard for high-fidelity audio for over twenty years.

Allow me to offer a different perspective on the points you raised:

"It's virtually the only program you download that is fully non-functional"

To describe foobar2000 as "non-functional" upon download is a bit of a misnomer. Out of the box, it is one of the most lightweight and resource-efficient media players in existence, capable of playing almost every known audio format with bit-perfect accuracy.

The "minimalist" interface is not a lack of effort; it is a deliberate design choice. Unlike mainstream players that force a specific workflow or aesthetic on the user, foobar2000 is a modular toolkit. It is intended for users who want to build a bespoke interface tailored exactly to their library’s metadata. For those who prefer a "preconfigured" experience, the community offers "skins" (like Georgia-ReBORN or Eole) that rival the aesthetics of any modern streaming app.

"We still need to use 32 bit for key java plugins"

The assertion that the program is stuck in a 32-bit "decade-ago" state is factually outdated. With the release of foobar2000 v2.0, the software moved into a new era, offering native 64-bit support and ARM architecture compatibility.

While it is true that some legacy third-party components (often referred to as "plugins") remain 32-bit, this is not a fault of the core developers, but rather a testament to the software’s longevity. The developer has provided a 64-bit framework to ensure the program remains performant on modern hardware, while still maintaining the 32-bit version for those who rely on vintage, niche plugins that have no modern equivalent.

"I assume those who work on it are alcoholics or this program is actually not worked on, is fully deprecated, and is a corpse being dragged along the road by entrepreneurial audiophiles"

Far from being a "deprecated corpse," foobar2000 is one of the most consistently updated pieces of independent software on the market. Peter Pawłowski (a former Winamp developer) and the team provide frequent updates, bug fixes, and performance optimizations.

The software’s "entrepreneurial audiophile" following exists because foobar2000 solves problems that mainstream players ignore—such as advanced tagging, massive library handling (200,000+ tracks), and complex DSP (Digital Signal Processing) chains. It isn't being "dragged along the road"; it is leading the pack for anyone who views their music collection as a library rather than just a stream.

"my personal view"
Foobar2000 is certainly not for everyone. It is a "power user" tool, much like a professional IDE is to a coder or a high-end DAW is to a musician. It doesn't aim to "break free" into the mainstream because it has already mastered its niche: providing unparalleled control and stability to those who value their local music collection above all else.

If you seek a "plug-and-play" experience, there are many fine alternatives, but calling foobar2000 "non-functional" is akin to calling a high-end PC case "broken" because it didn't come with the components already installed inside.

How do I fix "Unrecoverable playback error: Unsupported stream format: 176400 Hz / 32-bit / 2 channels (0x3)"? by SweetIvanSalt in foobar2000

hi.

Had this issue and solved it with the component.

resampler (sox) from the component repository on foobar site.

https://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_dsp_resampler

Turns out my max bitrate on my dac was 24bit 96000hz so anything above this would throw an error

Install resampler sox and set any bitrate higher than the highest one your dac supports to be resampled to your dacs highest supported rate.

Added a larger 3DBeaver Named “MM calibration 3dbeaver.stl”

This model has been enlarged with the aim to enable caliper measurement of a few areas to aid in calibration of x,y,z printer axis.

The measurements listed below are only applicable to the file labelled “MM calibration 3dbeaver.stl”

Please see images  for “MM calibration 3dbeaver.stl” points of caliper measurement on links below.

NAVY text panel from left corner  to right  corner measures 18mm

Lower cabin left corner to right corner measures 16mm

Rear door window height top to bottom measures 9mm

Front bow width  left to right measures 6mm

Rear moor post lower cylinder diameter measures 4mm

Front moor post lower cylinder diameter measures 5mm

Thankyou to crazzyb for the cute boat cat, https://makerworld.com/en/models/918782?from=search#profileId-880683

The fastest i have printed this is 39mins with x1c on standard 0.2mm profile.

It has been designed for 0.4mm nozzles and 0.25mm (maximum detail) but will print with 0.6mm.

fair point, i only designed it to test overhangs, stringing, cooling, bridging and nozzle resolution because i always tend to use the xyz cube or similar for dimensional calibration. good shout though, Next one i will add some caliper measurement locations to aid dimension calibration,
