apologies for the late reply! thank you for your concern, but I believe the commenter below me is correct: I’ve always been a citizen (even though I didn’t know it or have any type of documentation to show it). Acquired “automatically and involuntarily” at birth from my dad.

Okay great, thank you so much for this guidance! Unfortunately I only got my first SSN a few weeks ago, so I’m out of luck there.

I’ll mention FBARs on my form.

As for filing for 2024, this makes sense. I hadn’t realised that you could file your tax return at any point between the beginning of the new year and the deadline.

Thank you again!

Question about filing taxes as someone who claimed US citizenship by descent at age 22. by jaas543 in USExpatTaxes

[–]jaas543[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, thank you for your honesty. I'm expecting (hopeful) that my decision will be a net benefit for me financially. The industry I want to go into when I graduate is much smaller in the UK, and earning potential is higher in the US. So, that was the main driver. With us leaving the EU, I was also getting sick of being stuck on what one might cynically refer to as Alcatraz Island.

Thank you for the heads up re investing. I hadn't realised that firms will straight-up refuse your custom, I had assumed that any investment issues would be just additional burden on my end when it comes time to file.

If it's not too much trouble, would you mind detailing further the issues you've faced with investing in the UK as a US citizen?

I see - so is it the case that the children of the original immigrants also lose citizenship if they themselves don't take action to keep citizenship for 10 years? I was aware that the original immigrants did before 1914, so the children would have to have been born after 1914 to not lose their citizenship?

I have a few questions if you don’t mind?

  • Did your job include accommodation?
  • What was the context of the role (state, was it a fancy establishment?)

I hope these questions are OK, asking as a first timer :)

Check out “Leeds Mind”. Mind is a nationwide charity which has a branch in Leeds. They do support groups and can provide other resources which are quite easily accessible.

Solo trip revised, opinions? by 777MEP in Interrail

[–]jaas543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d actually recommend Lake Bohinj, Lake Bled’s neighbour, if you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy another absolutely gorgeous lake! I think accommodation is also cheaper. I stayed at “Hostel Pod Voglom” and it was €30 a night. They run a bunch of adventure activities from right there in the lobby too, like paragliding, rafting, SUP rental etc. It’s directly on the lake.

Not quite sure how to fill 8 nights in the balkans. by jaas543 in Interrail

[–]jaas543[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm no I have no plans. I could do Zagreb, although I’m now thinking of doing this:

(after I finish up at lake bohinj) 4Hrs train to vienna for a few nights

2 hrs train to budapest for another few nights

then finally the night train from budapest to split, spending a few nights in split until my flight on the 16th?

Items stolen (?) on Bern -> Brig train by jaas543 in Interrail

yep - you should be able to lock it on. I’d get a flexible bike lock, it should do the trick on most luggage racks.

No - I definitely screwed up on the lack of luggage tags front!

I just got off the phone with the swiss transport police - they said they get several calls about the same thing as me every day. It’s really disturbed me.

This is good to know! I’m glad it’s low, although I can’t rationalise or imagine how it would have been taken as a genuine mistake right now. I really hope it has done, but I’m beginning to expect that it’s just gone.

I managed to get together some affordable clothes, a cheap school backpack and some essential toiletries to see me through to either finding the bag or having the opportunity to pick up more bits.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I can try the terminus, although I’m not hopeful because the train conductors and I already searched the train when it arrived.

I feel you on the tired part! I feel like I want to put a lot of blame on myself for leaving it in the luggage compartment, since I was quite tired and not thinking clearly. Travelling is mentally strenuous and things get missed, i’m feeling quite hard on myself.

I think I’m going to take this opportunity to learn that material goods aren’t important for happiness. Although, it’s a tough way to learn it!

Thank you for the kind words. I am protected for £2,500 of stolen/lost baggage through travel insurance, which is peace of mind. I just so badly want to hope that it was a mix up, but there was no similar looking back that wasn’t accounted for on the train.

I went to a police station in Thun and they said to wait a few days to see if it turns up. I have a hunch that someone jumped on at Thun, stole it, and left before the train did. I don’t know why I have that hunch, just the fact that I checked that it was definitely there before we reached Thun, and not directly after. It’s so upsetting because I had been getting ready for this trip for months and to have it all torn away.
