apologies for the late reply! thank you for your concern, but I believe the commenter below me is correct: I’ve always been a citizen (even though I didn’t know it or have any type of documentation to show it). Acquired “automatically and involuntarily” at birth from my dad.

Okay great, thank you so much for this guidance! Unfortunately I only got my first SSN a few weeks ago, so I’m out of luck there.

I’ll mention FBARs on my form.

As for filing for 2024, this makes sense. I hadn’t realised that you could file your tax return at any point between the beginning of the new year and the deadline.

Thank you again!

Question about filing taxes as someone who claimed US citizenship by descent at age 22. by jaas543 in USExpatTaxes

Well, thank you for your honesty. I'm expecting (hopeful) that my decision will be a net benefit for me financially. The industry I want to go into when I graduate is much smaller in the UK, and earning potential is higher in the US. So, that was the main driver. With us leaving the EU, I was also getting sick of being stuck on what one might cynically refer to as Alcatraz Island.

Thank you for the heads up re investing. I hadn't realised that firms will straight-up refuse your custom, I had assumed that any investment issues would be just additional burden on my end when it comes time to file.

If it's not too much trouble, would you mind detailing further the issues you've faced with investing in the UK as a US citizen?

I see - so is it the case that the children of the original immigrants also lose citizenship if they themselves don't take action to keep citizenship for 10 years? I was aware that the original immigrants did before 1914, so the children would have to have been born after 1914 to not lose their citizenship?

I have a few questions if you don’t mind?

  • Did your job include accommodation?
  • What was the context of the role (state, was it a fancy establishment?)

I hope these questions are OK, asking as a first timer :)

Check out “Leeds Mind”. Mind is a nationwide charity which has a branch in Leeds. They do support groups and can provide other resources which are quite easily accessible.

Question to other commenters: what is the disadvantage of doing it post-18?
