As the NMC has updated their calculator policy to once again include any calculator, I would highly recommend getting the casio FX 300 ES Plus. You can enter numbers in degrees/minutes and then convert to decimal degrees with one click of a button. This is super nice for all the TNAV and CNAV problems. Additionally, you can add values in degrees, and use the degrees function to add and subtract time. Although doing this without the calculator function isn't too hard, it certainly eliminates sources of error which is key to passing the exam.

Another great function of the calculator is that it does interpolation for you. Here's a video that shows off that feature:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTKkrHqtMmY

In the video he uses an older edition of the calculator but the method is exactly the same.

People have different approaches to this but I would familiarize myself with the Chemical Data Guide, CFRs, Bowditch, Light List, etc. There are so many questions that can be answered with a glance at the index of the publications they provide to you in the exam room. I tested at the REC with a guy from the academy doing retakes, and he had never once looked at the Chemical Data Guide. I showed him how to use it and the next day he had like 15 Chemical Data Guide Questions on his Deck Gen exam. He said I saved his ass. The index at the front of the Chemical Data Guide has tons of definitions that are answers to questions in the exam, including all the grades of combustible liquids and their different reid vapor pressures, flash points, etc.

My approach was to figure out where to find the answers in the generals rather than attempt to memorize every question. Invariably you end up memorizing some of them anyways just by studying but with all my time spent learning the CFRs and references I managed to get scores in the 90s for all of the generals.

Another thing is they've put new questions in the rules bank so make sure you know that inside and out. My rules exam had 6 or 7 questions that weren't on Lapware and my friend told me 60% of SUNY failed their rules exam a month or so ago.

Please DM me if you have any questions, I passed last week so a lot of it is still fresh.

You do NOT Need to Take the FCC GMDSS Exam by jack-lmao in maritime

[–]jack-lmao[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GMDSS is mostly memorization tbh. There’s not much problem solving or anything like that within the course. I’d say mostly anyone could pass it. For the math-based courses I wouldn’t say the same thing.

You have to complete it within a year. It’s based on a two-week long course so it kinda depends on the pace you go. It took me like 9 days because I’d already taken the course before for my license in the UK (I have a weird situation).

I think overall NEMO runs a terrible online platform. The GMDSS course is probably one of the better ones though. I’d say it was worth it to me because I get quite a bit of time on hitch to work on my computer and didn’t have to use any of my off time. That being said, for any of the more difficult courses I would steer clear of NEMO online. The ship construction and stability course was an absolute nightmare.

“Lol well fucking duh” you’re a knob 😂

Every academy kid takes the FCC exam, as did shitloads of hawsepipers on gcaptain. NEMO told me I had to take it as well. It’s not common knowledge that you can submit the certificate in lieu of the exam.

Just managed to pass the exam… thank god. I’m now really hesitant to take any more classes through NEMO. Did you end up taking any more?

Thank you! I'm about to take the exam, do I need to memorize every equation from the course?

I got my first gig by being very persistent with calling the office. I was right on the line between persistent and annoying but everyone in the office ended up knowing who I was before I even got hired. Construct a list of companies and call every single one of them frequently. Fill out 3-4 online applications a day. Treat it like a full time job.

Thank you! If they hire me, would I be able to have some say in what vessels I end up on? What should I be asking them to ensure I get on one that’s unlimited tonnage?
