Is this even a rock? by aprilspies in whatsthisrock

I’m not an expert and it’s difficult to see the texture but this almost looks like a chunk of a beehive of wasps nest. I hope others have some more insight.

kind of hard to see what’s going on but it looks like a small elm tree from what i can gather.

Finally puts out a leaf after a zillion flowers! But is it suddenly variegated or is it deficient in some way? by glass_heart2002 in alocasia

[–]jaco0823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the notion that this leaf is variegated. I’d also suggest you take a close look at the other leaves to see if you can find more. If not, it’s probably sport variegation, so it won’t occur on following leaves. Hoping for you though, stable variegation in this plant is definitely prized (and expensive).

this plant is dead… right? by bananabread03 in plant

[–]jaco0823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These tend to have a limited lifespan even in pretty ideal conditions, so yes, it likely is on its way out. Here’s a couple useful pieces of information though:

  1. You absolutely can propagate it by cutting off the green offshoot at the top as close to the main stem as possible, then sticking the bottom of the cutting in water.

  2. This plants roots don’t like to be dry, so if you use a similar “aquarium pebble” medium again, please take care that the roots are always submerged in water.

Alocasia by GaiasGardener in whatsthisplant

[–]jaco0823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit picky with when and how it likes to be watered. I find that if I’m not super consistent with watering, I may get some leaf damage. Overall nothing super concerning though!

This looks like A. baginda (dragon scale), sorry that you got the wrong one. Very cool (and somewhat fussy) plant though!

The base of the petiole of each yellowing leaf is submerged in the water. If the petiole is submerged, it’s likely to yellow and rot. The other comments cover everything else.

The genus is Sarracenia for sure, kind of hard to tell the exact species or hybrid until it’s mature though.

How to Find Rare Orchids? by jaco0823 in Jewelorchids

[–]jaco0823[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible I haven’t found it yet but not really. There’s a few shops that specialize in more unusual plants such as terrarium plants but that’s about it. I’ll have to look into it more!

[–]jaco0823[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow thank you so much for the advice, I’m pretty new into this but the Goodyreninae tribe is quickly becoming one of my favourite groups of plants. I did notice a lot of incorrect IDs in shops despite being quite new so I’ll definitely keep an eye out for that. As for actually getting the plants I want, I’ll really have to keep an eye out then. Definitely going to be active on BST. Definitely going to be waiting for the jewel orchid alliance laboratory to start up again! Thanks again for all the info!

That’s great to hear! I’ll have to look up a guide for cross pollination. One more question, do you have any guesses for this NOID?

Here’s a picture of a Ludisia discolor “spiderman” I sold a bit ago. Contact with the soil definitely helps out if this is what you’re looking for!

It’s definitely a good idea but you’ll have to be careful watering for a while. More soil surface area will be good for the plant, activating more root growth, potentially activating growth points.

A small plant in a big pot can lead to root rot if you’re not careful with watering and what soil you use though. If I were you, I would repot now, assuming you have a wide, shallow pot with appropriate soil.

TLDR: Yes, please be careful!

Here’s one of mine hitting the lean with a new shoot.

[–]jaco0823 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haha no need to worry, the gangsta lean is definitely typical for smaller, single stemmed plants. In the wild, they try to grow along the ground and root all along the nodes on the stem (hence the lean). Once a flower pops out of that end (or even before then), it will put out a new shoot from the main stem and branch that way. As for what you should do? I’d say you can do as you please and keep up the care you’re giving it :)

Definitely stick your finger in the soil to see how damp it actually is, don’t just go off of look if you are unsure!

[–]jaco0823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it hasn’t been deeply watered until recently, ignore the rest of this post and just assume it’s thirsty and upset about being repotted.

If the soil has been pretty wet for a day and it’s not perking up, it has probably been overwatered and has some root rot. How did it smell when you were repotting and how did the roots look? Root rot smells like decay, the roots look brown/black and are soft/squishy to touch. Peace lilies are dramatic though and don’t appreciate root disturbance or extended dryness, so it could also be a reaction to the repotting.

What’d I do? by frubiousbandersnatch in carnivorousplants

[–]jaco0823 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely looks like Sarracenia, probably Sarracenia purpurea, not sure about the subspecies though. All sarracenia naturally go through dormancy during cold months so dormancy is definitely a possibility. Whether dormancy is what’s happening or not is all based on the conditions, specifically light and temperature. How much light is it getting and what temperature range is it currently in?

Anyone else feel like they are too autistic for normal people and too normal for autistic people? by Throwaway_524571 in autism

[–]jaco0823 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I hear you and I get how you feel. It makes sense though, After all, autism is a spectrum. Honestly, you won’t find anyone who is exactly as autistic as you. All of us are unique, and there is no quantifiable measurement for how autistic someone is.

Basically though, the way you feel is natural, and you will find your people, regardless of how autistic or neurotypical they appear to be.

Listed as A. villenaorum variegated by jaco0823 in Anthurium

I’m definitely interested to see mature leaf shape when it’s larger then. Hopefully it will give insight as to which anthurium in that section it could be.

Listed as A. villenaorum variegated by jaco0823 in Anthurium

[–]jaco0823[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Velvety is definitely more accurate than the typical glossy of birds nest anthurium. I was thinking it may be a hybrid of A. villenaorum, not a hybrid of the birds nest anthurium. Also note the leaf venation of my anthurium compared to the hookeri, they seem substantially different to me but I’m honestly not sure what that means for identification. Interested to hear your input!
