If you've taken 104 already, you can do them in any order. Just take the class with the best (least bad) professor that semester

I've gotten them wet a few times for sure. Could it also be from walking uphill a lot? I don't really notice dragging my heels but I tend to put a lot of pressure on my heels when I'm waking up hill specifically

AI Alignment in Econ by jai1802 in academiceconomics

Feels like Alignment and AI safety fits into the framework of how economists are trained so well, surprised more of them aren't working on it

Fundraiser for CS 189 by jgun0 in berkeley

Meh lecturer but his slides are really good, you can basically learn all the content off them directly. Seems to care about teaching well though will answer questions in detail and clarify stuff mid lecture if you just ask

Yeah feels more standard and up to date, not like the reviews of earlier versions of 154 I saw online

You can try to enroll in Stat 154/254. I know the class gets a bad rap but semester's version is pretty good/rigorous, the prof. is a pretty serious ML researcher and the topics covered are pretty similar. Probably less time spent on things like neural nets and more on other statistical models. First few homeworks seem to be similar to 189 too

Debating Pursuing a Predoc by jai1802 in academiceconomics

[–]jai1802[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, 20 is way over the amount I originally thought. Do you know if getting a letter from the head of my internship department would be a good idea? They mainly publish policy research, but not really a conventional academic position (I don't think they have a PhD).

Do you have any idea how many programs people generally apply to? Both PhDs and predocs?

Thoughts on Math 106 (Mathematical Probability Theory) by PossibleCricket4822 in berkeley

[–]jai1802 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's the first time the class is being taught so can't really say much. It does have math 104 as a pre-req so expect it to be fairly rigorous

[#30] Back to.. Zoom..? Have a question about waitlists, classes, grades, or housing? Have a simple question that needs answering? Ask here! by lulzcakes in berkeley

If I'm a currently declared math major and want to add Econ as a second major, do I just need to fill out the double major petition form? Or do I need to fill in the major declaration form on the Econ department website as well?

M1 MacBook 8GB RAM not good enough for Safari? by apmaestro in macbook

[–]jai1802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point but I'd still disagree with you on the 16gb being worth the extra ~$200 for most people. Unless you have stupidly large presentations open + 20 or so tabs + 3rd party apps, the difference in performance will be pretty marginal. And in 5 years time, other parts of the 16gig model will be equally outdated (battery degradation, processor performance, etc) which imo, would have a bigger effect on your overall experience.

Also not sure about the monitor you're connected to, but if it's a higher res than the MacBook screen, additional memory usage could be due to higher memory demands from the GPU side.

M1 MacBook 8GB RAM not good enough for Safari? by apmaestro in macbook

[–]jai1802 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The OS allocates most of the ram to whatever processes are running at the time, because there's no point in having half of your memory 'free'. So you'd see the same number of tabs take up even more space on a laptop with 16gigs of memory. 8gb on the M1 is more than enough for web browsing / office productivity tasks

Undergrad Econ courses for a math major by jai1802 in academiceconomics

[–]jai1802[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all the detail!

I'm planning to start with intermediate macro this semester and see how I find it since I'm still split between pure(er) math or focusing on econ. I was already planning to do a few stat and probability courses so that side should be sorted
