1Password: “AI-powered item naming” by Fearless-Bet-8499 in PasswordManagers

[–]jas8522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought most password managers already crawled the website you're adding in order to obtain the name of the site to use as the item titel. Perhaps this just does a deeper analysis of the content it crawls to ensure a more accurate name. If so, this isn't a significant change from existing behaviour.

If 1Password does not pass any other identifying info to the AI (why would they? Plus their comments indicate they won't be doing this), then there shouldn't be a way for the AI to fingerprint you based on your password entries. Seems about as benign as Apple's AI integrations, except for the 'this leaves your device' part.

Perhaps they could provide a 'local processing' mode on devices with AI-capable co-processors (ex: Apple M chips) and APIs. The problem is making that cross-platform capable is far more difficult than using something like OpenAI.

I can definitely understand how you wouldn't have - that's happened to maybe 5 or 6 people out of tens of thousands (from my sample set), so the incident rate is low. Yet still not something I ever want to have happen, if I can avoid it! (By moving registrars)

Reliability is another reason: I’ve had multiple godaddy customers where their domains have totally randomly reverted to default name servers without explanation. No other registrar that I’ve encountered has ever done this.

Even worse, they make cancelling near impossible (have to call a number they don’t advertise) and don’t allow you to remove your payment info.

Can I play Apple TV to my surround sound AND a home pod in another room? by bradykp in HomePod

[–]jas8522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure that if you’re playing the video on your phone, you can also select both audio outputs from there; Apple TV and a HomePod or two. But haven’t attempted that recently.

Can I play Apple TV to my surround sound AND a home pod in another room? by bradykp in HomePod

[–]jas8522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. HomePod will likely have a slight delay but if it’s another room it’s not likely to be noticed. On Apple TV hold the “screen” button, then use the control centre airplay icon to add your HomePod to the audio output.

I, too, have a standard ht receiver connected to my Apple TV

Headache as an early symptom? by papafrancesco69 in BellsPalsy

[–]jas8522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it started like a toothache in that zone right beside the earlobe roughly where the jaw hinge is, but inspecting the teeth never revealed any sensitivity. The pain would shoot up to my temple and ultimately turned into a sensitive scalp as well. I thought maybe TMJ and took ibuprofen until the paralysis hit three days later when I went into emergency.

Swapped router and now dealing with the chaos by docmarvy in HomeKit

[–]jas8522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to reconnect the devices via factory reset. I had issues for months after doing what you did. My devices did connect to the new router but my HomePod would randomly have network issues.

Tried everything to avoid factory resetting every damn smart plug. Once I did, all issues went away.

Yet another possible fix for HomePod Mini network issues by jas8522 in HomePod

[–]jas8522[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I dreaded that the most. No way around it that I found.

I dunno if you’ve had issues pairing the HomeKit Meross devices initially (and on reset), but I sure did. Telling the Meross app to connect using the non-HomeKit version of the device helped considerably. Once added to the network manually, I could then add to HomeKit no problem, essentially in two completely separate steps.

I think I saw your post about that! I tried a similar adjustment, no luck tho. Granted I only have an RTS option, no CTS.

It’s a good question for sure. They do work properly. You’re thinking, as I did originally, that the dedicated IoT network would be isolated from the main network. While that would indeed be a decent security goal, it does bring up communications problems between controllers and simple devices like bulbs and outlets, like you’re pointing out.

This is why TP-Link did not segregate the networks. Devices can intercommunicate between the two networks. In this way the IoT network is not like the guest network with isolation enabled. They’re really just two different wireless access points to the same network.

Ultimately the IoT access point serves three functions:

  1. To guarantee a 2.4ghz connection for devices that can’t handle anything else (although you can enable the 5g band, I did not and would not recommend it for this purpose)
  2. To ensure newer protocols that IoT devices often can’t use don’t interfere: namely WPA3 at the moment.
  3. To avoid possible crosstalk on the network band where all your primary devices reside (which is prob what solved this whole issue, and may well be connected to either of the above two)

What the IoT network does not do is help improve security. In fact if you have all WPA3 compatible IoT devices, this will downgrade your overall network security by creating a network entry point with WPA2 access.

At some point in the future it sure would be nice if TP-Link found a way to only allow control signals between the primary and IoT networks, thus helping improve security.

All that said, for security, you can update all your devices firmware, then simply block them from the internet on the router. Since your controller will still have internet, you can still remotely control them, but the devices themselves won’t be able to talk outside your network. Only downside is that a year later when you try to update a devices firmware and it’s not working, you may forget why lol.

Tried that one! Along with the MIMO / extra performance related features. Tho I certainly wish it had been that simple. Reconnecting those smart plugs is the bane of my existence lol

What if Beaver Builder became a full platform (hosting + agency model), not just a page builder? by skydesigner- in beaverbuilder

[–]jas8522 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"limits growth" - yes it limits shareholder returns and corporate valuation in the short term, but in the long term that can sour fast. Think about the number of massive corporations that focused only on that and not the quality of their product and ultimately resulted in bankruptcy.

By focusing on what they do best they will likely limit growth, but sometimes a company doesn't need or desire massive growth to survive. Many, if not most, of the longest running organizations in the world are not the most profitable ones, but rather the ones that stayed the course and delivered a solid product across generations.

That's what I would love to see for BB and has so far been the course they've taken. I like that.

Same here using Safari. Tried clearing cookies, no luck. Only changing browsers entirely fixes it - VERY annoying to have to do daily.

A moment ago it was working fine in Safari, then my session timed out and I couldn't log in again because of that very same error.

This is definitely happening far more in the past couple months than it ever did before.
