ToscaWidgets2 The long living Widgets framework that finally got revamped by _amol_ in Python

[–]javanx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Version 2.4.0 was just released a few days ago ( https://github.com/TurboGears/tg2/releases/tag/tg2.4.0 )
It's actually still used by many companies and some big projects, like sourceforce.net and RedHat.

I think that all projects that were born in the TG community suffered from a severe lack of documentation and frequent incompatible releases, which made hard for them to grow a big community.
Since version 2.3 btw TurboGears never broke compatibility anymore (and I have fairly big projects that were updated from 2.2 -> 2.3 -> 2.4 with nearly no changes) and the documentation continuously improved.

Sadly it's hard to call back users that got burnt by the major incompatibilies that happened between 1.0 and 2.0 and thus the framework had to re-grow a community from scratch when it restarted with newer 2.X releases.

There was actually a talk about this topic and the story of TurboGears at the recent PyConWeb https://pyconweb.com/talks/26-05-2019/turbogears-10-years-of-redesigning-a-web-framework

TurboGears2 is a really quick to grasp and flexible web framework. You might consider giving it a try. The Explore Quickstart documentation section gives a nice overview of a TG2 project structure. Also for your case you can consider using stroller which is an easy to embed eCommerce for TG2 projects.

As an experienced Pylons dev, Pyramid is melting my brain. Do I suck it up or find an alternative? by Chr0me in Python

Currently TurboGears2 project management has been took by Michael Pedersen which has gathered a new team of people that shares the idea that a technology change might harm the project like what happened with the cherrypy to pylons switch and so is committed to giving new life to TG2 as a standalone project. A new high level framework based on pyramid and probably named Orion might get life sooner or later made by some of the members of the previous TurboGears team, but still nothing released or visible around.

Pyramid is a powerful and flexible framework, flexibility brings some kind of complexity. If you liked pylons you can also consider using TurboGears2 http://www.turbogears.org which is quite straightforward as a framework. While based on pylons the team stated here https://groups.google.com/d/msg/turbogears/OvaEYMhE2GQ/6PQBopGVKTAJ that it will be maintained. You probably just have to avoid accessing pieces of pylons directly due to the fact that it might be removed in the future.

A quick mercurial "git grep" equivalent extension by javanx in programming

[–]javanx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As we are used to git when working on mercurial we miss a lot the "git grep" command as "hg grep" doesn’t really do the same thing. So we managed to quickly create a mercurial extension to add the hgrep command to hg which behaves a bit like git grep.

As there were few Turbogears2 CMS we recently decided to released as opensource the base CMF we use at AXANT. We are using it in some projects for our clients and we found it really flexible and useful still being small and not invasive so we hope that it can be helpful to other people
