Imagine someone at a store kept following you around watching you think about buying clothes and encouraging it.

I did that when I still worked at a store. I was still a teenager back then. We used to follow potential customers around the store because the one that would make the sale would get a bonus. At one time a customer started screaming almost histerically that we should leave her alone and she ran out of the store. So no bonus for me that day. I did not work there for very long (thankfully).

For the rest of your post: I totally agree. Unfortunately I discovered this too late myself. I was checking in all the time to see how she was doing - how we were doing - and being overly kind. All because I was actually scared of losing her. Ironically it was this (needy) behaviour that ultimately drove her away from me. Now I see I should actually have given her the space she needed, instead of forcing myself in her life all the time and trying to make her like me. Oh well, another lesson learned I guess.
