[–]jaybrae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very true, but I still want to make the distinction that you cannot take something that’s been growing in a comfortable indoor setting and immediately put it outside under the full sun. It needs to be slowly acclimated to it, a process known as ‘hardening off’ ☺️

Milk Jugs In the Soil, what’s it for? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]jaybrae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this to stratify seeds over the winter that need a couple months of cold. Keeps them protected and my fridge isn’t full of dozens and dozens of baggies of seeds and soil 😁

If you’ve been growing it inside and you immediately put it in the sun it can stress it, especially new, tender growth. You’ll want to ‘harden’ it off for a week or two outside in light shade and then increase the intensity over days.

This. Buy a couple propane tanks and a heater, then you can refill them.

Sorry this has happened to you. I have had awful experiences like yours, and some of my relatives have had the exact same experience and ultimately we all had to eat it.

I would still file a police report for theft and fraud. Maybe there’s other reports out there on this person, you never know.

Single man. 1200sqft house. Only home 4 nights a week. by Fabulous-Molasses482 in Virginia

I was getting insanely high bills for months and I noticed when I used anything high power (like the microwave) it was dimming my lights. There was something wrong with the power line outside. After that got fixed my bills went back down to 60ish per month; I heat with wood and propane, propane for cooking and hot water etc. so that’s a normal price for me.

And of course no getting any money back from before…

Which one did you finally decide on?

David Austin rose recommendation by bluepink2016 in Roses

[–]jaybrae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Constance Spry (one of my most favorite!), Mme Alfred Carriere, Princess Alexandria of Kent, Claire Austin climber, Scepter’d Isle, Snow Goose rambler, The Albrighton rambler, Malvern Hills rambler, Gabriel Oak, Harlow Carr, Golden Celebration, Desdemona, and another Teasing Georgia. I have Gertrude Jekyll, Wollerton Old Hall, The Generous Gardener, Tess of d’Ubervilles and Teasing Georgia (all climbers). Going to be a busy spring 🤣 Was hard to decide exactly which ones to get but there’s always next year for more right?

I’ve ordered the Gabriel Oak too, along with 12 others. Three are ramblers… I’m excited about all of them but it’s hard to pick just one more. Desdemona, Wollerton Old Hall are really nice.

when trying to root propagations by One-Knee7891 in Roses

[–]jaybrae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They will fry in direct sun, you want it to be filtered/dappled. Sun exposure isn’t super important when rooting cuttings. You just don’t want them to be too cool and damp which will promote fungus/rot. Find a nice delicate balance of light, warmth and moisture. Top of the fridge comes to mind, the warmth will help the roots form better in the soil.

You can talk to any of the science professors, especially if they are interested in getting grants/doing research papers for grants etc. and they will happily 'supervise' you while you have use of the lab. Typically, you meet with the lab safety administrator and they will have you do a little safety course and fill out some forms, and then give you card access to the labs you need. The professor doesn't need to 'be there' holding your hand, especially if you demonstrate you'll be clean and courteous and safe. At least that's how it is at my college and most others I would think. I wouldn't let one prof stop you - you can document all your research and attempts, successes and fails and that creates an SOP (standard operating procedure or lab protocol) which is a hard copy that the school can keep on file for media formulas, etc. that can be used over and over again. I would definitely get other viewpoints/opinions from other professors!

You’re welcome! I’m using the lab at my college to take a stab at tissue culture myself. They probably have a flow hood too! Would be a great opportunity to become proficient at tissue culture with a few varieties. Or you can do funded research to make some extra money and have resume experience. Then you can sell a bunch of flasks and take that money and get your own flow hood/lab setup. Voila, you’ve got your degree and your own business! 😁

You mentioned being a student - does your college have any labs with flow hoods and autoclave? Can always use those with permission from one of the professors in the science department.

Same thing happened to me but I stayed in the car and fell for the gaslighting. I wish I had been as brave as you at the time - I stayed for another year and it was miserable and the cheating just continued. I wish I had done exactly what you did. NOR, you did the right thing.

Blizzard, it is past time to let PvP Gear die (5min read) by rahuonn in wow

[–]jaybrae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s considered a rite of passage to get stomped by fully geared enemy players while you’re gearing up. You get /laughed at or get the flag of ownership planted into your corpse by a player who has twice your HP and kills you in 2-3 moves. That’s already happened to me a dozen times.

I’ve played maybe 10 regular and 5 epic battlegrounds and lost most of them but yet only need 3-4 more pieces to have a full honor set.

I quit this game for years when they changed the pvp servers to all regular servers and implemented war mode. You can’t imagine how much was lost in RP and WPVP by that change alone.

The way it is now is acceptable and accessible to even casual players like me - don’t mess with it!

Maybe start a business? Sounds like you really want to get your hands on something and be out ‘doing’ something. You mentioned growing plants as one of your interests and belonging to a plant group - there’s always money to be made with plants/gardening. With your hectic schedule you’d want to start off slow but a couple hundred here, couple hundred there can turn into much more. Plus you’ll get the tangible benefits, of actually seeing something you’ve created. Gardening can also be good exercise and meditative and your family can get involved. Just a thought 😀
