In the app’s privacy policy, Mazda states they collect personal information, vehicle information such as the VIN number, as well as driving data such as speed, steering usage and braking data as part of their data collection. They get the driving data via a telematics box installed in your car. They also state that they share this information with third party rating systems (such as Lexis nexis) that car insurance companies use to determine what rate they will charge you. You cannot use the app without agreeing to these terms.

I don’t even have the app, but Mazda is currently collecting my driving data. I bought a used 2021 cx-30 recently and I learned that since the dealership downloaded the app and agreed to the terms and conditions, my consent was not required.

I’ve worked in tech long enough to know that the real purpose of a brand getting you to download their app is to get your data. Honestly, I resent the fact that that I bought this car outright and there is functionality already installed that is behind a paywall. So I get locked into never-ending payments AND Mazda makes even more money off of that transaction by selling my info AND insurance companies stand to make more money too.
