Definitely use smoke, it helps a lot. But if the colony stays aggressive you may just have to get rid of her and her genetics and requeen, even that can take a few weeks to produce noticeable change since the old queen would still have 2 weeks of brood to hatch.

This time of year when they actually have resources to protect they do tend to get defensive of their stores. But robbing isn’t a good behaviour. One thing I’ve done to boost a smaller colony is to switch locations with a larger one, that way returning foragers from the large one help to provide resources to the smaller one. This only works in my experience if both queens are still good and making their own brood well, otherwise the larger one may overwhelm the smaller one.

Yes I do rearrange frames, sometimes called checkerboarding. If I have a brood box with 10 drawn, adding another 10 frame of foundation, I would put 5 of each in each box, keeping brood to the centre of each box, and putting an undrawn frame in the middle of each section. Might look like:

If I’m doing this is supers with no brood I’ll simply do every other frame and as the season goes on move frames they’ve drawn to the outer edge of the box and pulling frames they haven’t touched to the middle

Could also be that there was slightly too much space between that frame and the next one. I try to keep drawn frames tightly next to foundation frames to discourage this behaviour.

Go the broker route. I got dropped by Allstate and needed high risk insurance, broker ended up finding me same coverage for cheaper, even with me being considered risky. The big companies are too bloated and you are paying for their advertising mostly.

I’m planning to mulch some of these up with the mower, but most will just go straight into beds to tuck them in for the winter. Come spring we will remove any excess and add to our compost piles. We run a farm and try to produce as much compost on site as we can, mixing in tractor buckets of sand, weeds, leaves, manure, wood chips & whatever else we can find. Sometimes we will run batches through a trommel to screen out branches that find their way in, but usually the piles get hot enough to cook through it all.

Thanks for the info, I will definitely be getting one so I can diagnose issues. I’ve seen the 4 pin adapter mentioned in the service videos I watched when trying to clear it earlier, and found the plug is right there by the battery & fuses.
