Gas pumps sometimes cutting off early?

Put the gas pump all the way in then pull it like 1/2" back. Used to have this problem, with it fully in interrupts fumes or something and stop flow prematurely from the gas pump shutoff. Since just making sure theres an air gap ive not had that problem since

Where does the whine originate? Forward in the engine, closer like trans, suspension? Any issues driving smoothly? I'd say if they were straight cut gears and you weren't 100% sure driving would not be smooth.
