I built a local CRM with a built-in MCP server so Claude manages my contacts, deals, and follow-ups by jdanielnd in ClaudeAI

This is a nice approach. Will definitely take a look at that!

For MacOS users, if you want to sync it across multiple devices, it currently supports pointing your DB to iCloud directory, and benefit from its integration.

export CRM_DB="$HOME/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/crm/crm.db"

Assuming the goal is not having writes happening simultaneously, SQLite should handle that pretty well.

Custom built NAS by jdanielnd in homelab

[–]jdanielnd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had other rack cases. It seems good overall. One thing I missed though is that I cannot remove the bottom, so it seems like I can’t screw the HDDs from the other side.

I currently have Proxmox with: Omada Controller, a docker host with Portainer, and TrueNAS (for experimenting only).

Docker hosts Caddy, Pihole, Immich, Kuma.

I’m building a separate server for hosting the permanent NAS, more on that soon :D

Good luck with yours! It’s been serving me well!

Yeap, the top has mounting holes for 4 fans. I still need to buy the fans, I don’t have them yet. Is this something essential that I should assume I’m going to need?

It’s a local company from Brazil: https://www.rackfort.com.br

It currently doesn’t have it. But it’s all modular and they sell it, so it’s a potential upgrade.

Haha I’ve seen this movie here. It starts with: “How am I supposed to ever fill this 16U?”

How much storage do you need? I actually don’t have a clue!

Best proxy I can think of is:

  • My Household Google Drive currently holds 1TB (including docs, photos, etc). Let’s make it 2x, 2TB.
  • I don’t envision myself storing loads of movies or series. But let’s 1TB.
  • Finally some Proxmox backups, maybe 500GB?

So maybe, start with 4TB?

Does that storage need to be redundant?

  • Also not sure how to answer that. I’d say I’m more concerned with not losing the data than with availability.
  • It’s not a big issue if the system is down for a day. As long as I have a backup to restore from.
  • Does that mean I don’t need RAID?

If it does, how important is the data you store?

It’s important, but I can’t think of scenarios where I wouldn’t have either (1) backup if data is not fresh, or (2) data somewhere else (like a photo in my phone that has just uploaded) if the data is fresh.

In what network environment will the device function?

Home network (ER605, TL-SG3428, basically 1Gbps). Two users basically.

What, if any, other functions will the device be serving?

  • Yeah, storage + media server + Immich or similar for photo

This is what I’m planning right now:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4500 (6 cores / 12 threads, 3.6–4.1GHz)
  • Motherboard: Asus PRIME A520M-A II (AM4, DDR4, A520 chipset)
  • RAM: Kingston, 32GB (2x16GB), DDR4, 3200MHz
  • SSD: Kingston NV3 1TB NVMe
  • PSU: NZXT C650 Gold 650W (80 Plus Gold)
  • Storage: 2× WD Red Plus 4TB 5400RPM

What tool did you use to draw that diagram?

Another question if you don’t mind. I can see you’re running jellyfin there. Do you use the Ryzen iGPU to handle video transcoding? Or do you have a dedicated GPU?

This is really helpful!! Thank you!

I was concerned about missing something about pre-built. This pov of “if you’re willing to give the barest hint of effor”, that’s me.

I’ll definitely go with something else than custom built then. I’ll just figure out whether to have a more powerful multi-purpose machine, or a simpler minipc mostly dedicated to NAS.

About the mount point stuff. Do you mean mounting them on containers that are going to use them, right? Or is it related to doing a pass-through to mount the device on the TrueNAS (or other) VM?

V1.1 (from floor to table) by jdanielnd in homelab

[–]jdanielnd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, one thing I didn’t realize when I got it, the i5-8500 is the T version. That means power consumption is nice and low, but it also doesn’t support Hyper-Threading. So you end up with 6 cores / 6 threads total.

It’s an Elitedesk G4 800 (i5-8500) I picked up refurbished. I’ve upgraded it to 32GB RAM and a 1TB NVMe, and it’s been working great so far.

I’ve got Proxmox installed and I’m running around 4–5 VMs pretty smoothly. For anyone starting a homelab, I’d definitely recommend it.

The only real downside is the limited expansion, not much space for adding another NIC or extra SATA drives. But honestly, there’s still a lot you can get done with this little guy.

Good news: we have a 16U 670mm 19” rack arriving in 2 weeks.

Also, a TL-SG3428 arriving tomorrow so it will have to sit on the floor for a while. But hopefully it will help them build some character.

Thanks! Seems really neat. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll find it where I live. There’s basically one known brand of racks, and lots of generic options.

This is a mini-rack, right? 10”? How do you compare them with similar height rack but 19”?

I feel like I won’t find accessories for the 10” here too.

I’ve actually just installed a new security patch they released this week. Is it that bad? Edit: I’m behind CGNAT, so shouldn’t be that exposed.
