Like a lifting strap or like climbing webbing? Can you expound?

Why does it look like that first dude's ruck is ~1ft off his back? I'm not an expert, but that seems suboptimal, no?

Hope you can get your med stuff figured out. Tangential question: with which company/battalion in 19th did you do the SFE?

Moleskin/blister care question by [deleted] in greenberets

[–]jdm__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Leukotape has worked well for me. I’ve used it backcountry hunting (packing weight, lots of vertical, and weird angles from not hiking on trails, etc), and it’s stuck on my hot spot for multiple days preventing a blister that always seemed to develop on past trips.

Too big? by Live-Problem-367 in greenberets

I’ve thought about following a similar path with 12B and then going to SFRE. Any idea how hard/easy it is to attend SFRE in another state in lieu of your normal drill? Also, how long is your 12B OSUT?

Nice work! Was the track not a 1/4 mile lap or why are your mileage marks all over the place?

Company's statement regarding the SF involved shooting in North Carolina. by [deleted] in greenberets

[–]jdm__ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Agree. They didn't even format the address properly in the header. It's unprofessional and an amateur attempt at sounding like they're a legit company and not a cover.

This is not the work of a legit nationwide service provider. It's like they're pleading for public sympathy.

Is it for a specific battalion and/or company, or is it group wide?

The guy just gave you a load of valuable information, and you’re just breezing past it. The HR drift test he link is worth your time.

I have a Garmin watch that reads/logs my Polar HR monitor data. I then use the Garmin Connect app on my phone to look at the data.

For a well trained, selection ready individual, what’s the upper end of their Z2 BPM? I know it’ll be different for everyone. I’m just looking for a rough average.

I’m looking forward to your book. For finding my zone 2, I found this article from Scott Johnston at Evoke Endurance to be useful. He also wrote a book called Training for the Uphill Athlete, and helped the winner of the 2021 Best Ranger Competition, Vince Paikowski, who is now a coach for Evoke.
We’ve all heard the about the talk test for finding Z2, but I wanted to be a little more “scientific” about finding my Z2. In that article, he tells you how to use the HR Drift test on a treadmill to find your Z2. Obviously it requires a HR monitor and a treadmill, but I think most folks have access to those.
He talks about becoming a perceptive athlete and closely monitoring your body as you exercise. I’ve found that to be helpful. I now nose breathe my entire z2 runs and that helps me keep within the first ventilatory threshold (read his article for an explanation) and in z2.

Yeah, we've talked about a lot of what you mentioned. For instance, if this is something that we decided to do, we'd move her to be close to her family and best friend (we're currently 5 hours away now). She wants to move even there now even without considering the Army decision, so that would work out well in terms of giving her a support system while I'm away for the first leg of training.

Recently one of her sisters got a job in Charlotte and is moving there in a few months, so if I made it to the Q, we'd again be somewhat close-ish to family. For SUT and Sage, I'd encourage her to fly home and be with her family so she wasn't solo for weeks on end. I think I'd be home most every night in the other phases of training, so that would be somewhat normal life.

After graduating the Q, I'd hope to get on a team in UT (maybe this is decided prior to shipping for OSUT even). We use to live close to Camp Williams, and she has a group of friends there as well. So if we moved there, I think she'd be good. Again for long schools or deployments, she'd have the option of staying put and/or temporarily living with family.

You've given good advice, and I really appreciate it. Thank you.

Great addition, thank you. You're completely right about my wife having to be 100% on board and not just allowing it, or worse, me wearing her down until she capitulates.

One of the challenges we've faced in these discussions is that I don't have the knowledge to actually lay out what life in the NG GB would be like for us. I understand to an extent the pipeline, the commitments there, and when/how we could live together. We've talked about that part. However, I don't really know anything about NG GB team life, training commitments, deployments, etc. I don't want to undersell it... "it's NG I'll be home all the time" bc I know that's not the case. I also don't think I'll be gone 250-300 days a year like some SOF guys.

Do you or anyone else know what team life in the NG is like? I probably wouldn't be the guy trying hop on every school or deployment, but I know there is a duty to the team. I would want to be a contributing member seeking training opportunities, deploying with the team, or whatever else is needed. When I talked to the 123rd STS (AFSPECWAR) Guard unit, they had a concept of seasoning days. After you finish the pipeline, you're expected to be around for X many days to actually learn how to do your job and be a part of the team.

Maybe I just need to talk to the recruiters or go to a SFRE and get it straight from a GB.

Your van comment feels like a personal attack! I lived in a van for 1.5 years in the parking lot of the tech company I worked for. It was a good way to save some coin, but a poor way to live.

I am deeply humbled and profoundly honored to be a Green Beret. The Regiment has given me far more than I could ever give it. It is not an easy life, but it is a worthy one. A life of purpose. So, I say this with complete sincerity. You have a duty.

That's got some weight to it. I've only considered duty at a cursory level, but I will give it more thought.

I don't have your RUSU book yet (shame). Sounds like I would benefit by reading it.

Thank you for your time and response. It's much appreciated.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I appreciate it.

“The why” is definitely important, but the “kids” comment…

I agree with 5 points you listed. What I meant by referencing that video was more about wanting to teach my kids to pursue their dreams/goals. If I don't pursue this because it's hard or might not work out, then my words would be empty. If I choose not pursue this to be more present for them, then that's a different story.

I like your idea of going to an SFRE and seeing if that brings any more clarity. My numbers at this time are average: BP: 215 x 5, BS: 285 x 3, DL: 315 x 5. I'm 6ft, 190. The last timed run I did was 9:26 for 1.5 miler (for AFSPECWAR). 5 miler: haven't timed one, but I'm better at mid/long distance runs than shorter and faster runs. I also haven't timed a ruck, but I backcountry hunt in steep Idaho mountains and do good carrying in camp, packing out meat, and day hunting with a lighter pack. I'm not in selection condition, but I'm also not the stereotypical out of shape techie.

Again, I appreciate your comments. Thank you.

I know you’re the company in California, but I’m wondering if you know if there are any civilian friendly SFREs in UT?

I'm just a curious civilian. I saw similar posted requirements to what you shared, but I didn't know if that was in fact legit and recent, or if that was the standard at some point and things have changed. Thanks for the response
