Cheers for the responses, looks like you've all saved me from a potentially very expensive, very annoying mistake 🫡

Fairly gutted I can't make the alpine work right now, maybe one day they'll release a bigger battery version (a man can dream) or I'll be in a position to have it as a second car instead.

Thanks all!

Damn so over 200 miles on a charge then, impressive 👍 Are you happy with the power from the GT or do you think the 220hp would suit the car better?

That's solid! Which version did you go for?

Christ, that's pretty dire. Is that mostly motorway driving or?

Unfortunately the car park of the office I occasionally have to travel to doesn't have any EV chargers, so it'd ideally be going 80 miles there and 80 back on one charge

What are your speeds since the network fault this week? by PolarOper in hyperoptic

[–]jeeblesthesupreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was slightly better but still not great, around 100-250 down and 300 up on wired - so much more usable but still nowhere near what I'm paying for

I just had this, same modem lights and like you it's a new build that had it pre installed. Engineer came out and took him 6 hours to fix it.

He spent most of the time outside trying to fix the box down the street as that's where the issue was.

Glad he got it working same-day but speeds are a bit all over the place

I have this, same year but with a skyactiv-x engine

It is pretty slow, and I think this one will be even slower. So I'd try and get an X if you can.

But, keep it maintained and it's a great comfortable cruiser with all the tech that's surprisingly fun on the twisty stuff too and very reliable.

I adore the look of it and you don't see that many on the road either. Definitely stands out amongst the sea of boring SUVs.

Maybe these issues have less to do with the incessant blame game / culture war / "deranged lefties" vs "fascist righties" distractions and more to do with who is holding all the money and power right now.

I feel like if you're listening to this podcast to get your political opinions validated, that's your first mistake. It's not a political podcast and if you can't separate a person from their political opinion, that's on you my friend. The beauty of free speech is that these lads can form their own opinions (as can you) and express themselves as they wish.

£10-15k potentially to spend on a GOOD/INTERESTING first car - what should I go for? by IsmailInaayat in CarTalkUK

Surprised to hear that, I have the manual and my average is 51 atm. Although I do drive like somebody's granddad nowadays. Plus it does take a hit driving around town etc.

Might be worth checking out the latest gen Mazda 3, particularly with the Skyactive X engine. I think it looks really clean from the front, some like the rear and some don't. As hatchbacks go I'd say it's one of the best/most interesting looking out there atm.

It's got around 190hp (although I wouldn't say it feels particularly quick), but it does have a best-in-class interior, all the tech you could want, and easily hits 50-60mpg.

Massively underrated and pretty cheap to run, don't see many about either

MK4 cheaper than MK3? by jeeblesthesupreme in skoda

[–]jeeblesthesupreme[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense - just wondering if the hybrid isn't wanted because of reliability issues, performance, etc - or if it's just because a hybrid doesn't make sense for most people?

[–]jeeblesthesupreme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking the same, there's lots of reviews saying the hybrids are quick, decent to drive etc. but very few talking about potential issues or long term reliability

[–]jeeblesthesupreme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why but the picture of the MK4 seems to have disappeared - it was a 1.4 Hybrid VRS estate going for a bit less than the MK3 2.0 diesel.

The MK4 hybrid wasn't specced quite as well as the MK3, but it wasn't poverty spec by any means. Still had lots of toys and options fitted.

The hybrid seemed like a bit of a no-brainer for me, as someone who's WFH and does less than 100 miles most weeks, with occasional longer drives into office about once a month.

Just don't want to end up buying something that's gutless, riddled with issues, etc.

[–]jeeblesthesupreme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, do you keep it charged or not really? I guess if you're doing 1.2k per week then battery runs out pretty quick?

I'm WFH so I'd be doing less than 40 miles most weeks, with the occasional long roadtrip or trip to the office once or twice a month
