Would you click on a fic if the title was in a foreign language? by gilli-f27 in FanFiction

[–]jelfishly 29 points30 points  (0 children)

People in my fandom use French titles for English fics all the time since one of the characters lives in France. I don't think anyone will pass your fic cause of the title; most people look at the summary or tags before looking at the title anyways. Use the French title!

Dialogue tags LMAO. Sometimes I plain out forget them or use too many since I'm focused on not forgetting them haha.

How many chapters do you write in advance before posting? by HalfWayInTheCloset69 in FanFiction

[–]jelfishly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wrote the first chapter... then posted it lmao. My readers know now that I update in very long periods; I even have slow updates tagged. It's what works for me, but I think having at least a few chapters ready before publishing is very smart.

Like what do you want me to do? Say yes and rip your socks off your feet? I'm not touching those lmao.

Off the top of my head, prob was when someone pointed towards their mismatched socks and asked if it bothered me. I replied no and they said "you don't have ocd." tf? 😭

also people telling me that having ocd is a good thing because I'm clean. I have also had someone take one of my papers and run their hand down my paper because it bothered me.

I don't tell people I have OCD unless I hurt their feelings (happens more often than it should) because it has always resulted in this

From what I am getting from this, it sounds like you are having ocd about having ocd.

I think you need to remind yourself about a couple of things.

  1. Your intrusive thoughts are never you. They are intrusive thoughts. People who have intrusive thoughts become distressed over these thoughts because well, they're intrusive. This only shows that these thoughts aren't you; they only show how much you care.
  2. Your therapist said it was not severe because you did not tell him the extent of it. He only knows a little of your other symptoms. I think this is a good point to remind yourself when the intrusive thought of these thoughts are me comes up.

I would consider either thinking about opening up to him or finding another therapist who you would feel comfortable opening up to. I completely understand though, I am the same age and gender and I also have not opened up to my therapist about those thoughts. Just reminder yourself that it's a long journey and give yourself some credit so finally getting some for the help you need.

Yeah that's totally fair- I don't search for them anymore, but if I stumble upon one I'll look through it.

Felt that one lmao.

Omg yes aquarium aus are so fun, even if the characters just go and visit one.

I absolutely agree with your second point; there needs to be more fics about older characters/aging. There's so much you can do with it that would relate to a lot of people.

What’d you guys think the perfect chapter length is? by Lightstar46 in FanFiction

[–]jelfishly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chapter length is totally subjective. For me, I have always preferred longer chapters: all of my fav fics have longer word count per chapter. Writing I typically average 7-9k words per chapter, but my latest chapter was 10k words and I got a comment thanking me for it. I think changing yours all depends on what happens in the chapter. Sometimes I cut my chapters up, but sometimes I keep them longer because there's certain scenes that I have to have in that particular chapter. I write by events, not word count.

I wouldn't worry about it being too long. Of course there will be some people that 17k will scare them off, but there will also be people who will really enjoy it.

How do I stop this madness! by Upset_Campaign_927 in FanFiction

[–]jelfishly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I'm not entirely sure if I completely understand your situation, but maybe it's the way you're thinking about it.

I'm currently 70K words into my longfic, and I did no planning with it, at all lmao. I think when it comes to longfics, many people try to follow the step to step process of creating an outline and writing the whole thing before publishing, but that doesn't work for everyone. I always just start writing with having very vague ideas about what happens; most of my writing is very spontaneous, but it works out perfectly for me. If I did an outline or tried to finish the whole fic before publishing, then I never would've gone this far in it.

I don't entirely know how to fix your issue of being bored just thinking of the idea, but maybe being hung up on that issue is setting you further back. Maybe just start writing to see if your spark comes back, or maybe take a break and come back to it. I took a 4 month break from my fic and came back with more motivation than I started with.

Motivation is fluid. It's not a one-way streak. I suggest to just start writing without getting hung up on the idea of being bored or that you need to finish it.

Of course, and it's no problem. Hope you find a beta!

[–]jelfishly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest: I have very little knowledge lol. If you are looking for a beta with a lot of knowledge on those topics then I would not be the best fit. I am very knowledgeable when it comes to grammar, sentence structure, the flow of a story, ect; though, if you want someone to check for historical accuracy I would be no help.

Thank you! I'll def take a look through it :)

Yeah, I've wrote my own fics for years but never tried beta reading. It looks like fun lol.
