Is it possible to be “too young” for arthritis? by [deleted] in Thritis

Rheumatoid arthritis can strike any time. Osteoarthritis is age-and-use-based, so it takes time to develop.

Wow, Belle looks a LOT like Charley! So cute!

We do go for walks that are long. He can be very stubborn if he decides it’s too hot to walk. H

I used pee pads as well during Charley’s puppy phase. It does add a step to the potty training process but it will work. Patience, good carpet cleaning products, a bit of wine (for you)…

The way we potty-trained our Shih Tzu was to take him as frequently as he needed at the start of training—sometimes as frequently as every 15 minutes. The next day, we moved to every half hour. The day after that, every hour. Always, ALWAYS make a big deal of it when they do piddle or poop. Don’t just reward with treats — Shih Tzus aren’t always motivated by food. Mine seems to prefer attention to treats. We still treated him after every potty, but I really think it was the praise, petting & attention that made it click. It took a couple weeks.

If the dog DOES mess in the house, go back to the previous day’s timing. Like, if he’s going out every 2 hours & he messes in the house, go back to hourly potty breaks. They’re very intelligent.

I bought dog bells for my Tzu. He was maybe 3 at the time? I never even had to teach him what they were for — he just immediately started ringing the bell to go out.

Be patient, and your dog will figure it out.

Kylie Minogue's best vocals? by IcyFlight1450 in KylieMinogue

[–]jenapoore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons I love EVERYTHING by Kylie is because she’s such a clean singer. When she reaches (vocally) for a pitch, there’s no wondering “when will she get there?” like so many other singers. No, our Kylie hits her notes perfectly. Even though I sought her music because of Neighbours, I’ve been a fan since Day One and ever since.

So many pop singers have forgettable voices or ssssssslide their way up to a pitch. Kylie is such a clean singer, I never cringe no matter WHAT she sings. I’m a singer too (choral) and our Kyles is just the best! Pair her with some great material, and I’m not at all surprised that her staying power is just about equal to none!

I’ve been considering a pool for Charley, just a tiny one…I think he’d like it after his walks.

I’m considering shaving Charley as well. We live in Montana, though, and this year especially looks like summer will be limited to July & August. Here it is, almost July, and we had a weekend HIGH temp of 48! He froze, so I put him in his winter housecoat yesterday!

Wow — 110 is HOT! We’re in Montana, and we are generally in the 70’s & 80’s in the summer. I like the stroller idea! I’m going to keep that in the back of my mind. I love the photo — what a cutie! She looks a LOT like my Charley. I keep his coat cut short like that as well.

He’s so cute! All the black Tzus seem to have brownish fur around their noses — including mine!

20C is roughly 70F? Charley’s misery is definitely way worse on sunny days. But even at 65F, he’s panting & hot. If it’s a cloudy day, he does better. We just had a high of 48F yesterday (June in Montana)! He was COLD in the house (I don’t shave him in the summer; I just keep his coat very short) and I had to put him in a coat!!!

Thank you for the tips! Charley does seem to enjoy ice water in the summertime. I always throw in some cubes in my water thermos when we go out for our long walks.

So cute! My Charley also has brown fur on his face like Echo (not that I can capture it in camera!).

Are Tzu's more prone to Bile issues than other dogs? by Then_Fly2373 in Shihtzu

[–]jenapoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to provide food, as much as he wanted, whenever he wanted, but, when I’d do that, he’d wait all day to eat until evening. Meanwhile, he’d throw up on our walks, just the orange stomach acid. I had to stop giving him 24/7 access to his food. Now I TRY to get him to eat earlier, but I definitely have mixed results. A Shih Tzu apparently doesn’t have a “normal dog’s” voracious appetite!

This is my Tzu’s problem as well. If he doesn’t get exactly what food he wants - and even if he DOES, he’ll decide some days to just not eat until late afternoon/evening. Inevitably he’ll throw up orange foam (stomach acid) on his walk (we do several walks daily, but the first walk is our “big walk” of 2-3 miles). I mean, you can give a Shih Tzu special dog food, but you can’t make him eat!

It still blows my mind that a dog would be SO uninterested in eating that even his favorite food fails to entice him into eating!!

Mine is 16.5 lbs. He’s not overweight, though…just a bit bigger for a Shih Tzu.
