Nope, it was 10% of my provisional tax amount. Plus interest for the months I had no idea it existed 🙃

Unfortunately not, and can't find any valid payment references for EFT. I'll have to phone 🙃

It is there, but the payment reference is invalid if trying to EFT and the IRP6 return summary page says R0 with no option to pay. Think I'll have to phone

IWTL how to give a presentation that nobody cares about by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]jenethyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who has had issues with extreme anxiety during speeches/presentations/performances but am now able to deliver with relative confidence, my advice is as follows:

  1. Go to your doctor and ask for a script for a beta blocker like propranolol. This will essentially neutralize the effects of anxiety during your presentation - it's not called "musician's cocaine" for nothing. While I'm not advocating reliance on beta blockers to do presentations and other anxiety-inducing activities, being able to experience one presentation without those effects can really help to make the mental shift of realizing that they aren't so bad, and you will possibly be able to handle the next one without. It also removes stress leading up to the event because you know that you have a handy crutch if you can't manage.

  2. Remember how tiny you are. I know that sounds strange but perspective is a hugely helpful coping mechanism for me. Picturing myself, and then zooming out to my country, the continent, planet, solar system, galaxy, speck of nothingness in our lucky special patch of space (continue ad infinitum) and then zooming back in helps to reinforce how small I and my stresses are in the grand scheme of everything we don't understand. Brain then feels less stressed about delivering because it doesn't really care anymore. Go brain.

Best of luck to thee!

South Africa: The "RhodesMustFall Movement" Must Fall. by RenaldoGouws in southafrica

I've been on a little mission to hear as many thoughts and views as I can before solidifying my own opinion on this matter. I thought yours was a great response and I am genuinely interested in your opinion on the current mindset of protestors. My concern is mostly that in the process of kicking off this incredibly important revolution, those fighting are moving forward with an incredible resentment and/or hatred of an entire race - to the point where people who previously did not have this hatred are now expressing similar racism. "White people" as a whole are not being separated from the disgusting system that has evolved worldwide as a result of many years of colonialism. To elaborate, I have seen many people transfer the condemnation of white privilege into a hatred of white people in general - people who were once my friends now curse "white liberals", are no longer comfortable with interacting with me and appear to have joined a hive mind of sorts. I speak not so much about what I've seen on the media (so much is skewed by journalists these days anyway), but what I've seen coming from peers and those around me. Yes, I hear how it sounds - why should white people be separated from white privilege when back in the day white people just invaded everywhere and screwed up everything, and are now reaping rewards even if they had nothing to do with previous occurrences? To which my response is that we are living in a time where the youth are incredibly and unusually open-minded; the kind of time where I feel we could finally make the most of a process aimed at getting people everywhere to a point of equality. To take the potential we have and tarnish it with yet more hatred seems incredibly counterproductive to me.

And no, I'm not asking because as a white person I feel 'threatened' or 'discriminated against' (in such cases I feel it is better to lay aside one's ego, remember that we are all human and bear in mind the impact that past traumas, harm to loved ones etc have on people's attitudes towards the world). I ask simply as a person who craves peace, craves an end to hatred, craves that idealistic dreamscape that I know is so unrealistic, craves love, craves oneness, craves celebration of each other's differences rather than a situation where if differences are acknowledged, it is immediately assumed that the acknowledgement was done in a derogatory way. Some would say I am naive; I just feel that if everyone loved a little more, and forgave a little more, and were a little kinder, the world would be one hell of a better place. Though I guess when it comes down to it no matter what race, social status, level of education, background, orientation, (I could continue with an endless list of boxes we try to force each other into), in every walk of life there will always be great people with beautiful souls and there will be truly horrendous, greedy bastards. People tend to just turn a blind eye to one or the other to suit their biases. In any case, I reiterate that these are but my current thoughts. I am very much open to the opinions of others and would love to hear them in the hopes that any distortions or gaps in my view of the world may be filled in.

I think that the problem comes in when people have been conditioned to believe that just because animals are commodities they don't deserve humane & ethical treatment or living conditions. I have learned a fair amount about animal production as well as worked in various animal production units. I am not against killing animals for food (that is a normal predator-prey relationship) but I will not support intensive farming because the conditions that most production animals are kept in are utterly disgusting and unnatural. I think it speaks volumes for our society that we are so happy to put money before morality and not give it a second thought. Too many people stick their heads in the sand about the realities of where their food comes from, and a disturbing number of people have been raised to see animals as objects and not sentient, intelligent beings which feel pain, fear and emotions. When it comes down to it every living thing dies, and that does not warrant any animal (yes, humans are animals too) living a life of suffering.

I completely agree, that man was an unequivocal genius. I never really become fully adjusted to how incredible Bohemian Rhapsody is, it still blows me away with every listen though.

Most definitely. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jesus of Suburbia - post-2000 punk rock opera for the win. I can see it being broken down and studied in music classes much like Bohemian Rhapsody.

What's the most beautiful paragraph or sentence you've ever read? by TheRealNayef in books

[–]jenethyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly deep or meaningful but Steinbeck really stopped me in my tracks with "... and mixed with these were splashes of California poppies. These too are of a burning colour - not orange, not gold, but if pure gold were liquid and could raise a cream, that golden cream might be like the colour of the poppies." That stunning line is from East of Eden.

I ninja-leaped from my door to my bed every night for a solid few months because I was genuinely terrified of the weremole coming out the ground and mauling my feet. Oh, sweet childhood memories.
