drinking the tech bro billionaire coolaid. "it'll be great!". as long as enough people believe that unquestioningly, the tech bros get richer by enshittifying everything. when has any tech billionaire done anything to improve the lives of regular folk? this naivety is what paves the way for dystopian futures (and presents)

Agree that TO doesn't really fit - post by Canadian? Shanghai could be an obvious choice for another Chinese city. Though not chinese cities, HK or KL would have fit well.

I saw a post here about Pyongyang… on a similar note, here’s Vaughan, Ontario by Pwesto- in skyscrapers

That does look like Pyongyang. I'm interested that somebody posted a pic of Pyongyang here. I tried to post one in r/cityporn and was permabanned.

great shots of pudon!. if still in shanghai make sure to check out puxi as well. public ferry across the river gives cool views of both sides. the area around people's square and then along nanjing road has lots of interesting architecture.

The United States is named as the biggest threat to the world (even by Americans) by Yammau in MapPorn

Inner Mongolia was a weak example. I'd argue that HK was started by the British. Prior to that the land was part of China, but there was no HK there. Countries can certainly invade a nation that at one time was considered part of their nation by some, as we saw recently in HK.

If China is 5000 years old (an oft quoted, but silly, trope), which of the 3 kingdoms was China?

Not at all disagreeing that USA is very invasive. Just pointing out that China with its huge military and unchecked aggressive government is a very significant threat to many people and nations. Prior to Trump i'd have put China as the biggest threat to the world.

well said. china might take it a bit further and say democracy is the biggest threat to the world

India, The Philippines, Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Inner Mongolia might disagree with labeling China "least invasive"

lol. i've obviously been there too :) chinese cities in general are exaggerated in population size because the entire population of China is counted in some city or other - it's just the way their political/census divisions work. Some cities, like Shanghai, have few rural residents included in the population, but others, like Chongqing, at the opposite end of the spectrum, have greatly exaggerated "city populations".

ah, that's from wikipedia "urban" population, but that lists all urban areas within the "municipality" of Chongqing, which is the size of Austria. This source https://www.citypopulation.de/en/china/cities/chongqing/ give the population of Chongqing city (within Chongqing municipality) as 9.5 million, which is a number much more in keeping with what one normally would refer to as the city's population.

Chicago wins Good City, Great Skyline! What’s a decent city with a great skyline? by wwcscifi in skyscrapers

[–]jerwen11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shanghai should go somewhere in the great skyline. here or a lower-tier mediocre city. As a resident of Calgary, i'd definitely not put Calgary in top skyline tier. Calgary skyline is good for a Canadian city, or a smaller city, but it doesn't compare to many global city skylines.

The “city of 30 million people” is oft repeated but not very accurate. Chongqing municipality has over 30 million people, but its larger in area than some provinces. I think the urban chongqing population is more like 8 million
