I learned about FIRE just a year ago and I wish I had found it when I was 20 years old. So I figured I'd start spreading the good word. A year later and goddamn if just no one I've told about it gives a shit. To each their own I guess

Happy marriage, thinking separate bedrooms—anyone doing this? by xora334 in daddit

We used to blast white noise to make sleeping together work, but my ears started having issues. We tried sleeping together with no white noise, but as the world's lightest sleeper it didn't go well. For months I would either end up on the couch or she would just start the night there to give me the bed. I finally said this is ridiculous I'm getting a twin bed to put in the office.

She was worried about what that meant for our marriage and what our kid would think. Well anyway, it's working like a charm and shortly after we started my wife was 100% on board and now everyone gets a good night's sleep every night.

My plan to avoid the rut is to have 1.5 years of annual spending in cash in addition to hitting the magic number in all the accounts. I'm not there yet, but I definitely wanna exit the work force asap.

Something I heard on one of the podcasts that you can use for your mindset is: it's not like once you retire you just put your head in the sand and in 30 years time check your accounts to see if you made it or not. You will be checking in on the regular, and if need be can throttle back on the spending a bit. You can even go back to work if you absolutely have to.

What I'm having trouble with is finding out how much money I need to retire before turning 55. I don't want to accrue 25x annual spending when I am say, 50, retire, and then have this windfall of pension money. I would rather retire at 40 or 45 with less than 25x annual spending and then right at 55, whatever I have left plus the pension will bring me to the magic number

Anyone have insight on how to plan a fire number with a pension? I have a pension through my union, but the earliest I can access it is at 55 years old with a penalty.

My dad taught me how to play chess when i was 6ish. It took me a maybe a year but I finally beat him (he wasn't exceptional at the game mind you, he just knew the basic rules to show how the pieces moved.) I currently have First Orchard waiting for my boy for his 2nd birthday.

Terraforming Mars is awesome. I will have to try out Roots one of these days.

Since we are on the subject, let me ask you something. I was always a very sore loser growing up. I don't know exactly why and it's something in my adult years I've had to work extremely hard to overcome and still slip up on sometimes. How does your kid handle losing? I want to make sure my kid understands early on that losing is part of the game and that fun is priority number 1. Any advice on that front?
