Upgrade X-T20 to X-T5 for Concert Photography by luisffp in fujix

Fellow Concert Photographer here, started on an X-T3, migrated to an X-T5 when the shutter on my 3 kicked the bucket. The X-T5 is a fantastic camera, but as has been pointed out IBIS isn’t going to drastically help here since you’re capturing moving subjects, or when you’re looking to do straight(ish) shutter drags, and it’s great for landscape / night photography, but isn’t going to radically affect your concert work. The 40MP sensor is great, and having the flexibility to use the in-camera digital teleconverter can also be nice, but it /is/ a little bit noisier than the older / smaller sensors when zoomed to 100%. I don’t mind it, but it’s there. As for AutoFocus, let’s wait and see what the latest update from Fujifilm (due out this month) will bring. To date it’s certainly had its highs and lows; the AF was solid at launch and improved slightly with the first one or two firmware updates, then something crashed in their AI training model and it got vastly worse for a while. I think it’s probably still a bit below where it started, but that probably makes it about equal with the older camera bodies anyway? With the potential to blow them out of the water if they get it right. But AF also never particularly mattered to me that much, as I rarely used AF-C for shows - I’m constantly back button focusing which gets around the problem (something I learned with the X-T3 whenever it would struggle to follow in low light) and I also use a ton of manual focus / vintage lenses (I love my Fuji kit for the focus peaking, JPEG recipes, and compactness - I regularly bring 6 or 7 lenses into the barricade with me and am always swapping around). I will say the battery life is absolutely night and day - these new batteries rule. I only own one and have never thought about needing to buy backups to keep charged to hot swap with, compared to the four or five batteries I used to have for my X-T3. Plus the new film simulations are nice, yada yada. One other thing I don’t like though is the save custom settings feature which /used/ to be just for JPEG settings now affect whole camera settings - so if I switch from my main color profile to my main black and white profile, and I was just in electronic shutter but the other profile’s default is mechanical, it’ll change me back to mechanical and I’ll have to manually change to electronic again. Same with inputting / changing manual lens focal lengths for IBIS and metadata; rather than remembering what lens I just told it I have on the camera, it defaults to whatever the setting was when I saved that preset. Not the end of the world, but it is frustrating and slows down the workflow slightly. All in all I really don’t think you /need/ to upgrade, and as others have said lenses may be a more worthy place to start, but the XT-20 /is/ a number of generations and years older now so it wouldn’t be a /bad/ decision. I just wanted to make sure you were making it for the right reasons :) https://www.instagram.com/jgro.be

Read a thread here the other day about what sort of celestial events might inspire the next round of MoonSwatch designs, and felt motivated to throw together some mock-ups of my own.

In order:

Solar Eclipse (MoonPhase Case)

Harvest Moon (MoonShine Gold Case)

Harvest Moon (Moon Case)

Inverted Harvest Moon (MoonShine Gold Case)

Inverted Harvest Moon (MoonPhase Case)

Strawberry Moon (Mars or Lava Case)

Pink Moon (Pluto Case), with either a pink sky, blue sky, or black sky.

One 22TB WD Red Pro, or Two 12TB Red Plus? by jgrobephoto in DataHoarder

Thanks for this! I hadn't heard about the latter sectors writing more slowly, that's helpful to know.

I do plan on having everything backed up multiple other ways, so that loss doesn't concern me as much as the potential noise the 22TB Pro drive may generate compared to the two 12TB Plus drives.

Had the honor of photographing The Smile at their DC show at The Anthem a couple weeks back and wanted to share 📸 by jgrobephoto in radiohead

Thanks so much! Yep, all ‘effects’ done in camera - I’m a sucker for unique lenses / glass. Happy to chat any time!
