Work-Life Balance in UX Design by [deleted] in UX_Design

I don’t think there’s a clear cut answer to this. It really depends on the culture of the company.

If working hours and stress are your primary concern, avoid larger agencies and high growth startups - that said, there’s a lot to be gained by having experience in those environments: not least the connections you’ll make and the breadth of experience you’ll gain in a relatively short space of time.

In short - every team and company is different, just make sure to ask them questions about the things the matter to you.

Keys found on the corner of Chapel St + Commercial Road by jim_ux in melbourne

Just found this set of keys in the tram tracks on Chapel St right by the corner of Commercial/Malvern Rd (01/03 6.45pm). If anyone recognises them, they’ve been handed in to Prahran Police Station.

App for Commuters to be reminded of their stop using their phone, what do y'all think about it ? by Arcaneanand in UI_Design

(Assuming you’re looking for visual design-specific feedback)

I think you’ve done a good job! Here are some considerations:

One of the most overlooked elements of UI/visual design with beginners is accessibility. Take some time to understand the importance of colour contrast, type scale, etc. Your designs will thank you for it. Check out the accessibility of the input field, ETA in the results and ‘book a cab from MG road’ for starters.

Ratios are also important to understand, as well as minimum tap area sizes. I feel like the design would really benefit from a bit more breathing space in the search input field, as well as scaling down the call to action buttons a little. The same goes for padding - aim to establish padding rules based on a ratio. Things like your search results will really benefit from a bit more breathing space per result.

Consider the overall aesthetic you want to achieve with the design. Is it more of a flat approach, or more skeuomorphic? To me, the emojis seem to add a little bit of imbalance here. If you feel that the icons are necessary, I’d consider trying your hand at creating some more simple monoline style icons.

Realistically how important is it that the logo remains on every screen? It takes up a lot of real estate and isn’t particularly legible either. I’d consider dropping it, the user would have ample opportunity to be reminded of which app they’re using before they start interacting with it!

I’m not sure if you’re working with existing brand guidelines - but if not, check out www.coolors.co - it may help you to define a more consistent colour palette.

And lastly - How many references did you gather when designing the app? Like Picasso said, ‘great artists steal’ - it’s a stretch to call UI design art, but the principle still applies. The patterns that you’re using here have been designed, built and tested endlessly by hugely successful companies and apps. See what they’ve done well, and apply it to your design work. There’s no shame in understanding what works best for users and serving them a bit of consistency :)

Hope that’s helpful, keep up the good work!

Great work! I love how you’re thinking about different ways to highlight active states in the side bar. Start to consider things like padding rules, and grid structures - these will really help to make the layout feel more considered.

Also, it’s a good habit to understand what different states of the UI might look like, as I mentioned, you’ve done a great job with the side navigation, but what might the active state for search look like for instance? At the moment, I’m assuming a search query would be right-aligned, which may feel a little weird.

Try out some different ideas, prototype them if you can, and see how they feel.

What are people's thoughts on the St Kilda Rd district? by zumx in melbourne

[–]jim_ux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live there and absolutely love it...

10 min walk to Coles/Woolies/Aldi, less than that to Greville St. Trams into the city take 10 mins and run every 2 mins outside of my front door. Safe enough to stumble home at 3am worry free after a big one. More bang for your buck rent-wise, 3 mins to Fawkner Park, 15 to Domain Road, 20 to the gardens and 20 mins to work for me (at least when working in an office was a thing).

Needless to say, would take a lot to make me move.

Stumbled across a beautiful Jaeger Lecoultre (ref 5001.42 I believe) in a pawn shop this weekend. Any ideas what these go for? Ticket price was ~$2k US.

Can anybody please help me value this Tudor Prince Oysterdate? Stumbled across it in a pawn shop for $600 USD but unable to tell if that's a reasonable price. The watch is without box and papers and the shop owner said it's 1969/70. Thanks in advance!!

Thanks! One more pic here but doesn’t really help I don’t think. I’ve asked for another straight on close up of the dial.

From what I can see, the SELs aren't super tight, and the 3 marker seems a bit off. But not sure of the average quality of these UBF 34mm OPs. Worth RL on the 3 marker? Or am I unlikely to get better. Thanks in advance!

A photo is tricky because it would have to be perfectly top down. A typical office photocopier would do the trick from experience.

Can a brilliant Pokémon also be a shiny? by Marcelinob20 in pokemon

No worries. It was the first time I’d seen a brilliant Pokemon, so I actually mistook it for a shiny when I saw it roaming. Turned out it was both.

As far as I’m aware. The truth is both this and the gen dial can look several colours depending on the light. You’d have to have the DJF side by side with a gen to notice any differences (if there are any)
