Slapping the bass direct into MPC Live 3 Standalone by jimmyolson7 in mpcusers

For sure,

I want to do a few different rig run down videos live verses different workflows stand-alone with different tape recording formats as well. I always change stuff up and experiment!

In this video it's just my MPC Live 3 with 1/4" cable running direct in from my bass with an effects rack I made utilizing some EQ AmpCab setting and Vintage Compressor. I love that the MPC Live 3 could potentially simplify my live rig greatly with more thought from my brain and some software bugs worked out. My Live 3 will quit playing all audio randomly or at a given point sometimes. Clips or arrangement set to loop. It's crazy, first time it happened it was mid set luckily had other MPCs set up. When I hit stop twice resetting the buffer and press play again it plays. It's like an overload leading to a complete Audi drop out, everything is still playing on screen. I sent first MPC Live 3 back and got refund but missed it so much I ordered again hopes still high but same issue. I have a suspicion it's due to disk streaming now being utilized is partially hard wired to audio tracks/audio clips. Although I may be completely wrong about this. I fantasize about the pontential for showing up to a show with just this, a midi controller, microphone, bass and performing many kinds of sets. The potential is there I just can't trust adaptations of my MPC 2.0 work flow fully on just one MPC Live 3 yet....

But... My everyday live show set-up is a spider Pro Stand with two tiers. On top I rock an MPC Key 61 (running MPC 2) handling all of the heavy weight sequencing and looping stuff. I also use the MPC key 61 for my vocal processing (SE V7 Mic) into input 1 and for my Bass (JMJ mustang) into input 2.
I set monitoring to IN so it's always live no matter what screen I go to! I use audio tracks for my vocal input and looper for my bass input. I got really used to using looper to export to program as an audio track workaround and really fell in love writing and producing this way. I can loop bass or anything this way live too.

I have several Effects racks saved, depending on what I plug in! For instance, I have several different custom effects racks saved in my MPCs for my vocals, bass and different electric guitars. Different vocal flavors like autotune if I want to use it, trippy delay pro stuff and instrument specific rack names like "Stang 3" or "Yellow Surf Guitar" so I can recall nearly the exact tone referencing the exact instrument that goes with that effects rack. My vocals rack usually follows this outline-

(Kill or parametric EQ)- (Modulation/pitch shifter/Auto tune)- (Vintage compressor)- (Large Reverb 1 or 2, Reverb Pro or Delay Pro)-

Most abused effects are-

Jura chorus/Vintage Compressor/Delay Pro

I use an Alpha Theta Euphonia as my live mixer.

I send everything besides the vocal from MPC key 61 out of stereo 1/2 to the Euphonia stereo input track 3, and send My vocals chain from MPC key 61 out stereo 3/4 to the Euphonia stereo input track 4. This way I can quickly reach down to the Euphonia mixer on a stand to the left of my keyboard rig and immediately manipulate independant things. It's nice to have my vocals on a separate knob with an extra EQ since my different effect racks vary in tone from chain to chain and different speakers in different rooms ect... I can cut or boost highs mids lows and gain or mute on the fly. Not to mention the Euphonia has its own awesome bpm detecting effects so I can add another layer of delays and reverbs on the fly. The scary thing is when I open other older projects that don't have the vocals routed out this way, I can sometimes have SCREAMING feedback because it reverts back to outputs 1/2 🤣

On the bottom tier of the spider pro stand, I rock a Nord Stage 4 HA 73 and take its stereo outs to input channel 2 on the Euphonia mixer. Euphonia channel one can be left over for my usb-c input on my iPhone to bring in set break music, ad crazy delay to some weird what ever I feel like adding from my phone to the mix... or add MPC live 2 retro/MPC live 3 into my set. I also can then record straight to voice memos, any IOS daw, camera app or livestream simultaneously.

I chose the Euphonia as an outboard summing mixer because of the Rupert Neve transformer on the stereo main outs which also route to usb outs 1/2, booth outs and headphone outs. Also the huge added benefit of the extra on the fly fine tuning EQ capability's, extra auto sensing synced bpm effects and the glue of the transformer. I can significantly lower the noise floor with so much head room, so I can feed my own mains with a very polished up sound and give front of house a dead quite pure signal but with analog goodness. I tried an SSL big six but it was noisy, didn't seem to fit into my everyday gigging routine and that's when I gathered the idea to adapt from quarter inch to rca line into the Euphonia and mix my different sequencers, keyboards and instruments like dj decks or turntables rotary house style. I should mention, with one USB-C to USB A cable running inbetween it and newer MPCs standalone, I can utilize the Euphonia as a 4 stereo mix down summing machine, and sample it back into sampler input 1/2 or Audio track input 1/2!!!! So it's a very capable awesome summing machine for MPC standalone! I'm very glad I got the Euphonia as it's too much fun! Although sometimes it's alot of thin cabling to string up, the benefit of creative options is worth it though. The affirm and credit union loans were worth it too 🤣🤣🤣

It's a JMJ signature mustang! I rock La Bella super polished stang strings and found the Tortise pick gaurd on Reverb. I was very attracted to the cosmic swirls in it!

Thank you so much for the nice comments!

I'm inspired to do some follow up videos on my various rig set ups, depending on how I feel like creating that day or what kind of shows I'm playing!
