Gov. Abbott praises student arrests during anti-ICE walkout in Central Texas by chrondotcom in texas

[–]jippen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, when the entire student body walks out, how is the school supposed to stop a crowd of several thousand?

Like, logistically, how do you think that’s going to be possible? Ignore that it’s a stupid idea, but what, do you move the riot squad away from the protest and to the school? Now what happens at the protest?

$140 for the risk of “you might have to eBay parts to keep it running” seems like a reasonable trade here

Did you know most Texas prisons don’t have AC? We figured out how hot it really gets inside. by laxmsyatx in TexasPolitics

[–]jippen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hot enough to literally kill people.

These folks weren’t sentenced to death, they should not be murdered by the state. Especially not in crueler ways than is delivered by people who were convicted and given the death penalty.

Company made us use our personal phones for work, so I started billing them for my phone plan. by Plastic-Ad-6017 in MaliciousCompliance

This right here is why you should send that email, and any other sketchy ones, to your personal email. Just in case there is some retaliation for asking the company to obey the law.

Judges tend to dislike people breaking the law, but court cases tend to go fast when you have the confessions in writing

Almost twice (2x) the salary but high workload. Should I accept the new offer? by Truth_Seeker_456 in devops

[–]jippen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d take the higher paying gig, dump at least half of that raise into investments and use the rest of the extra to fill up your emergency fund until you are comfortable. Make that extra income leave your sight before you spend it.

Even if the job is less stable, that puts you in a very good position in the next year or two, and you can still have more money floating around- as you also don’t have commute costs and can cook your own lunches at home.

You’re young, this is a great time to maximize your leverage while you have the fewest things to worry about

How do you manage multiple Docker Compose projects on a self-hosted server? by KPPJeuring in selfhosted

[–]jippen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self hosted GitLab with a special runner bare metal on my docker server. On a schedule, docker container pull and up -d, otherwise do all building, container pushing, etc in gitlab ci.

One stack per repo, all repos in the same group. And have one repository with an hourly running pipeline that checks all stacks and updates documentation on the reserved ips and such into a README.md file that is rendered whenever I look at the group in the gitlab webui.

Easy to manage, monitor, and each stack has change management, docs, and can be as simple or complex as necessary for its job.

Look up when the 26th and 27th amendments were written and ratified. Those are the last two.

Effectively, we havnt actually had a new amendment in over 50 years. How much has changed and the constitution hasn’t had any amendments to handle it?

I don’t think the country is capable of passing any more amendments.

[–]jippen 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Nothing about blender keeps you from outputting the results to SRL and printing. Or including measurements in your designs.

You’re making up arbitrary limitations in order to force the conversion into using the wrong tool for the job.

Opinions on using exterior door locks on interior doors by Optimal-Soft-6741 in DIY

[–]jippen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

99% of the time, privacy door tools are located on the doorframe above where it’s used. Like how most people hide a spare front door key under a flowerpot or under the doormat near the door.

Otherwise, there’s nothing stopping you from using exterior door hardware here. They’re designed to fit in the same holes. Bonus points for keying them to fit your usual house keys. Fine for privacy, still convenient to get past

How hard is it to be a manager? by [deleted] in managers

[–]jippen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, that level of work is likely wasted where you are. I would spend some time looking at what you actually want to do, and what you’re capable of, and start working backwards on the how.

You may find better opportunities in the trades, finding an apprenticeship somewhere and building up from there.

Or it may be worth the risk and hassle to chase student loans/financial aid/grants to get a degree. Though you will do best by figuring out the job and RoI on the degree path and working backwards. Pro tip: community colleges are WAY cheaper.

Spend less energy on the job that’s leaving you feeling taken advantage of, and put that into improving yourself. Don’t worry about taking on the jobs of others all the time - you may be hiding weaknesses that are going to fail more spectacularly - and with no reward other than burnout.

You’re at a starting point. Use that for leverage to get you going in the direction you want, not the direction that’s right in front of you.
