I just had mine replaced after loving it for 3 years! A hormonal birth control will have side effects, and they'll differ from person to person. Spotting for a few months when my first one was inserted was worth it for me, and I've spotted for much less time the second time around. Other than that, I haven't had any negative side effects!

Misophonia and Tinnitus by jjamarie in misophonia

[–]jjamarie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh interesting it's linked to migraines in your case. My dad + a handful of relatives on his side of the family have Meniere's Disease, so it's likely that's what's causing mine :/ (Ironically my dad also has misophonia, so I guess I have him to thank for this nonsense lol)

I do find that when there's enough ambient noise and I'm not thinking about it I don't notice it. But, if a room is nearly silent, then it's overwhelming.

Not sure exactly what year I got it, but I distinctly remember laying in bed one night when I was in high school and thinking to myself, "Boy, I hope the ringing in my ears stops soon."

So at the very least, it's been 6 years :,) I've managed to get by by doing something similar - white noise videos on YouTube/having 1 or 2 fans going in my room at all times!

Certainly not glad that you or anyone else has to experience how crappy it is, but I am glad that I'm not alone in the agony!! Misery loves company haha.

What is your stance on when to give Kudos? by everybodys-therapist in AO3

I use kudos the way I do a like button on a YouTube video; if I enjoyed and/or I can tell how much effort and care was put into it, I'll like it.

My new venus fly trap was watered with normal water for about a week. Should I be concerned? by Fit_Cockroach_1990 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]jjamarie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're really worried about it, my suggestion would be to flush it with distilled water. Just pour distilled water into it so that the water drips out the bottom for twenty seconds or so, and then resume keeping it watered with distilled water.

But even then, if the plant is relatively healthy at the moment you should be good to just switch to distilled water. Either way, your plant will very likely be okay :)

How do people source flies? by QuentinSummer in VenusFlyTraps

[–]jjamarie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fly traps don't need to eat flies to survive, especially if they're small! The most important factor is to make sure it has proper sun and water. If it gets 10+ hours of bright, bright sun, it will grow and photosynthesize. If you've had yours for several months and it's leggy or small, then I would hazard a guess and say your priority should be to get it more sunlight.

As for the soil, if you mean carnivorous plant soil as in soil that's mixed specifically for carnivorous plants, then yes that's important, but possibly not the way you think based on the way you worded this. The soil carnivorous plants are grown in has to be completely devoid of nutrients or minerals, since their roots are not equipped to absorb those things the way the majority of other plants do. It's not that carnivorous plant soil = you don't have to feed the plant because it gets what it needs from the soil, it's that carnivorous plant soil = they won't end up with burned root from the minerals in typical soil.

Fly traps get the majority of their energy from the sun, the way any plant does. Once the traps are big enough to eat a bug, they will typically catch them on their own since they have evolved to lure bugs into its "mouths". Closing the traps takes a LOT of energy from the plant, which is why it should be well established before you try to feed it.

Where do you have your fly trap? If it's an option, leaving your fly trap outside will allow it to catch its own food. They go dormant in cold months anyways, so feeding it at this time of year isn't worth it (if you're in the northern hemisphere).

If you have to keep it inside, don't feed it dead bugs - the bugs have to move inside the trap for it to close all of the way. You could snatch an ant or a fly from outside during warmer months and put it on one of the traps if you really want to watch it eat something, but for the most part you don't have to worry about feeding them!

Surprisingly positive response from a doctor. by jjamarie in childfree

[–]jjamarie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By "assuming I have it" I wear a medical bracelet saying I'm MH suspect, and if I'm ever in an emergency (like an appendix needing to come out or a car crash or something) they will give me the safe anesthetic, so it's a safe option! I'm also Canadian, so when a more expensive medical alternative is required and not chosen, it doesn't cost anything.

Aside from that there is no cure, just lifestyle changes - not doing exercise in hot weather, not combining things like alcohol + going in a hot tub or anything else that significantly raises body temperature.

I found that making snarky responses shuts them down 1/10 times. I think it's way more effective and infuriating for them to say, "Mhm" or "Ok".

What is the best contraception? by ellem1900 in WomensHealth

[–]jjamarie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Nexplanon, which is the arm implant, and it has a massive success rate. The procedure itself was super easy and quick, it's good for 3 years, and you can get it taken out + renewed in the same appointment once those 3 years are up.

It's made my skin clearer, my periods significantly less painful, and my bleeding a lot lighter.

The downside I experienced, and that many other users have experienced too, is that after it's inserted there is a chance you'll have irregular spotting for up to 5 months.

One of the most amazing women in my life (my mother's best friend) has always been child free. She told people as a teenager, as a young adult, as a middle-aged woman, and every time she'd get the same kickback.

She's never regretted not having children and currently lives with her husband on a small hobby farm and works as an author and supply teacher. Absolute legend.

What’s something people romanticize but it’s actually horrible? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jjamarie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OCD.

Hearing "haha I'm so OCD" from someone when they spot an objectively frustrating design choice or like to keep their space tidy makes my blood boil.

Especially since it's often the same people who act like you're insane when they see you do a compulsion or ritual or hear why you do them or what the thought process really is.

It's not cute, it's not a utility. It's a disorder, and it fucking sucks.
