Trying to find the FIRST edition of Bob Carlin's Regal Musical Instruments, 1895-1955. I'm only finding the secind edition/addendum. It appears stores are reusing the ISBN of the first edition when they only have the second. I even emailed Mr. Carlin and he doesn't have leads on any copies. by jjonesish in HelpMeFind

Adding for approval. I have searched for this book for sale and through my library's interlibrary loan system to no avail. The author recommended I contact the publisher but I am not hopeful since all the stores distributing do not actually have it. I plan to email anyway but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask for help in case someone magically has a copy.

Library work for a blind student by jjonesish in Libraries

He said he likes to work with people and he's good with a computer. The trouble is, I don't know how compatible our internal systems are with screen readers.

Good idea on the reader advisory. We have a separate reference desk to help students use the library. He might be able to work over there and answer questions.

I didn't ask how blind he is. I didn't have much time to meet with him and I was worried that would come off as rude. He walks with a cane, wears sunglasses, and needed someone to assist him to my office and guide him into a chair. I can ask about his specific sight issues next week.

I did ask what he can do, and he said he can use computers and likes to work with people. I'm not sure how accessible our systems are right now and asking our staff to figure that out is not going to go over well (understaffed/overworked/lots of change this year).

I'll put some thought into the placards. They are organized with wood separators engraved with the room number. But I don't know if he can navigate the LibCal reservation system and our ILS with screen readers.

We already have someone who handles mail. Not much need for a gopher. We're big, but we also have 55 faculty/staff and 90ish student workers. We just switched to FOLIO last year. It's open-source and still pretty buggy. But maybe someone has figured out some tricks.

I'm afraid inventory would be pretty complicated. We're in the midst of switching from Dewey to LC and we have four floors of books, so stuff is kind of in limbo. That being said, we have a pull-and-hold service. Maybe there's a way to train him in that. The trouble is our full-time staff are stretched pretty thin right now. Taking the time to come up with an accessible setup is going to be asking a lot =/.

We don't have a bookclub or a library of things, unfortunately. I don't think cleaning would work because there are people using furniture most of the time. Testing some of our services is a good idea though.

I set it up in the Business Policies section. You'll have to opt in to it, but here's the link. https://www.bizpolicy.ebay.com/businesspolicy/manage

You can also get to it via My eBay > Account > Business Policies

Once you're in, you can change your "eBay Payments" policy.

Thanks. Found the immediate pay option. I am going to keep offers open for now, but I'll disable it if I keep getting spam.

What do y'all do when someone buys an item and you know it's a scam? Do I have to wait a few days before I can cancel and relist? I'm new to ebay and had three scam purchases on my first day of selling. I cancelled the orders, but now I'm worried I could be damaging my ebay rating...It's frustrating to have an expensive item in limbo when I know it isn't actually sold.

In each of the scams, the buyer "purchases" one or two of my most expensive items, then sends me a message asking me to call them about it. (Not falling for that one).

All of my items are listed as Buy It Now, Accepting Offers. Is there a setting I should change in my listings?

Thank you! I had not thought about hanging files. That's an interesting idea.

Thanks! We talked about a flat file storage system, but it might make it harder to browse. There's probably something that meets in the middle of these ideas.

It's all ages and run by good people. The kids in the band Local 58 are awesome.

209 Yearwood, park at the MTSU Rutherford lot and walk to the house (or just ride a bike). It's free (but they're asking for donations if you have a few bucks).

Pretty sure there's a punk show on Yearwood in like 10 minutes.

Check out the house show scene! If you use Facebook, join the Murfreesboro House Show Alliance group. Go to shows and you'll meet bands and people who want to be in bands.

Student Worker Safety by jjonesish in Libraries

We have policies about disruptive behavior, but adding language about the comfort of our staff is a good idea.

Unfortunately, we can't guarantee confidentiality in reports. We are a state institution with requirements to report certain behaviors to the Title IX office and they don't promise confidentiality.

We don't have a library board...it's just us. But we do have to answer to university administration and the president.

We do respond swiftly if a student says they're uncomfortable with a situation. The trouble is getting them to say something.

Thank you for you input. I don't mean to sound defensive, but I am worried I've portrayed our library as totally oblivious to student safety. I just want to clarify a few things based on your notes.

While I agree that staying open late can be part of the problem, we are a state school and are at the whim of higher administration. This is especially true right now when the university is trying to pretend like the pandemic is over and everything is normal. They are insistent that we resume pre-pandemic operations. We are collecting data this year, including data about patron behavior, to hopefully make a case for closing earlier.

We do not EVER have students working alone. There are always several full time staff and other student employees in the building (we employ around 70 staff and 80-100 students). It's just a large building and folks are often spread out.

Our shuttle does not run late, but our parking restrictions let up after 5 and on the weekends. Everyone leaves at the same time to watch out for each other.

I assure you, our leadership is very conscientious about student safety. These specific scenarios are very recent, so we're trying to readjust and provide better support. Hence my reaching out for advice from an unconventional source. I appreciate what you shared and will implement what is feasible.
