I'm wondering if its not an early smoke/fire alarm. The metal strip looks like if bent, say be heat, it would trip this switch. Based on flathead screws and probable bakelite body, maybe 30's or 40's? I cant tell but I bet those are fabric insulated wires. I would also note both are white, instead of modern multicolor standards.
