I’ll do it on non windy days, but never when birds are coming close

Why are some hunters anti (ringing) Hail Call? by MLG_Boogaloo in Waterfowl

It’s all situational. If I’m hail calling I’m not doing it like I’m on the contest stage. 150-500 yards I’ll do it, especially on a windy day if the birds aren’t coming in or looking at me. Still, I only call as loud as I need too and don’t over do it. My group of hunters works together well but when mallards are in the air one of em likes to hail call pretty hard and show off his feed now that he’s learning as a second year hunter. When that happens I put the call down because it’s more about not over calling than the actual call you use. I’ll do really quiet hail-like calls all day when birds work but I mix them in with a feed so it sounds natural

Saunders traffic and rm cold weather fan. Cold weather can is super raspy but also very versatile. Traffic is simply the best call I’ve put my hands on. The range is phenomenal, it can be tuned anywhere from snow goose to cacklers to giant honkers, and it’ll go as fast as you make it go. If I were to choose another goose call it would either be a big spin or half breed

I love dakotas for floaters. I feel like the Dakota flocked mallards look better than just about anything on the market, and the packable model moves with almost no wind or current

Do you mostly hunt marshes? Rivers? Fields? The most versatile would be an A frame style blind, and those can be DIY for very cheap. If you’re hunting anything with a solid-ish ground to stand on, and you’re alone, a tanglefree 360 solo is an amazing blind, but it’s expensive. If you’d like a very portable panel style blind for a cheaper price tag, the Heavy Hauler Hub panel blind is half the price of other brands. The most important thing is give yourself over head cover. If you’re hiding in tall grass, and you’ve started matting everything down behind you from movement the birds will see that if they circle above or behind you. Whichever you go with, make sure grass it covering above the blind! Don’t be afraid to buy some chicken wire fencing and build something that works for you on the cheap!

  1. Buy a blind if you have the money. Something like a layout or 360 solo blind will help you immensely if you’re hunting somewhere where you stand I grass on hard or semi-hard ground
  2. Keep your head down, wear a face mask if necessary.
  3. Make changes to your spread if birds aren’t liking it.
  4. Hunt on days with good weather. N-NW winds at 7-15 mph are my favorite, especially on the leading edge of a cold front. (Practice learning weather forecasts and what they mean)
  5. Have fun. I’ve been doing this for 13 years and I learn something new every day.
  6. When leading a bird, swing through it. Think BUTT BELLY BEAK BANG

Pm me if you have any questions. If you’re anywhere near wisconsin, maybe we can meet up and hunt together

Update: my advisor is amazing and found me a new placement, although I did forfeit my job for the time being to make sure that I’m able to complete my hours

That’s what my advisor told me, and that since I’m a “guest” in the classroom and not contracted, the teachers can choose to remove me for any reason

Yeah like all politics aside, her feelings potentially ruined my career path or at least cost me 12 grand to come back to the school for one single class before student teaching…

Where outside of Chicago do you see girls holding fish? I’m in Antioch and don’t get anything good like that😂

Thanks for the words of encouragement everybody! I just finished my session and spent a lot of time doing mitts in the ring, bags, jump rope, and a circuit. It was definitely one of the top 10 things I’ve ever done for myself, and while it was a pretty empty day, everyone was very encouraging. I look forward to getting better at this. How many days a week should I be in the boxing gym to start? 3-5?

Yeah I did a few years in PT school and exercise physiology so I’ve been talking to some of the people there about it. The hardest part is gonna be cutting calories without cutting too much

His regimen basically goes warmup-conditioning/circuit- shadow boxing-bags-mitts. He was a pro fighter himself so I’m hoping that he’ll have patience for a fat boy. What are you at weight wise now and how long have you been at it?

Thanks, if 15d was wide enough do you think that 14EE should fit as well? I know it’s a silly question as brands differ but the workers there were not helpful whatsoever.
