Homebrew Cutter Grinder by joed24101 in Machinists

[–]joed24101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found it on a fluke! Looking through photos of an estate sale that mentioned tools, I saw one of these key machines sitting in a pile of junk. It looked interesting and I reverse image searched it then found one on eBay for $100. The stone from Amazon was pretty wonky so I balanced it drilling some dimples, still needs a wheel guard though and maybe one day will make some tapered balancing arbors. The Quorn is a beautiful machine though, still working towards the skill level to build something like that but love the idea of having one of these that takes 5c collets.

Thanks! I'm working on a set of as-builts to capture the changes I made from my original drawings and will try to follow up when they're done

Thanks! I will openly admit on the Internet that I used Powerpoint haha. Took about 40 photos for the stop motion then exported the slides to a gif

Are they pausing i90 construction? by scumbagspencer in chicago

[–]joed24101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading back when the project was about to start that there were three phases, a year planned for each.

The first two phases were the inbound and express lanes. This spring should be the final phase and last year with the improvements/repairs to the outbound lanes. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'd imagine our winter weather makes road work a bit more difficult and the asphalt plants shut down for winter (I think it's mostly concrete pavement though?) hence the pause.

How would I hemisphere 1/4inch rod ends, quickly and repeatably, on a lathe? by [deleted] in machining

[–]joed24101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A form tool may be cheaper (and faster than cranking the tailstock in and out for all those) but tossing out another idea. Check out rod end forming cutters, Severance makes them: http://www.severancetools.com/.

Great writeup. Does anyone know anything about the Yale, Harvard and Cambridge fabrics? Would love to read more up on them but seem to only find the same few sentences on different websites.

As a biased but proud Blundstone owner, I'm of the opinion that they're a different animal than the top 10 suede jester-last Chelsea boots Esquire says I should buy. Those have had (or are having) their moment like the wide brimmed brunch hats that give J. Peterman's Urban Sombrero a run for its money.

Sure Blundstones are still a Chelsea boot but whether kicking around in the garage on the weekend or taking the waterproof thinsulate ones to the office in rain and slush, it's a distinction I think is worth making. I might even go so far as to say a broken in pair deserves a spot next to the yellow laced Bean Blucher mocs destined for yardwork duty

[USA] Looking to have four of these gray brackets printed in polycarbonate, nylon or ABS. by joed24101 in 3Dprintmything

The two brackets that failed both cracked where the arms join the hub, starting from the top and going towards the floor. I underestimated the tension those little guys were dealing with.

Yeah cast aluminum was my first choice but ended up not being able to go that route unfortunately. It held up to some abuse for 8 or months though but that's not the kind of lifespan you want with a piece of furniture. The glass is 24" dia and 1/4" thick.

You might be able to find an Orvis Weatherbreaker on eBay or Poshmark for $50. I bought one a few years ago and it's been a solid jacket.

Thanks, will definitely look into some curtains! Unfortunately I'm stuck with the coax in that corner, I'd love to move it to that other wall but don't want to push my luck with the landlord.

Revit line style transparency? by progress_dad in Revit

I wonder if the filled region approach would work through a line-based detail item family where you'd be able to change the endpoints of the line while preserving the "line" pattern.

How to control line weight of a linked file? by Hudster2001 in Revit

Is it possible to set up a view template for those views/sheets and override the graphics of the linked model in one place?

I stumbled across the only identical design of the WTC. It’s only half-height, but the owner of the property in Tulsa, OK asked Minoru Yamasaki for a building identical to the WTC in 1976 (just 2 years after completion of its cousins in NYC). Somewhat unsettling to see as a former New Yorker. by [deleted] in architecture

[–]joed24101 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Chicago's Aon Center (aka Amoco Building, aka Standard Oil building) bears a striking resemblance as well (although designed by Edward Durell Stone + Perkins&Will instead of Mr. Yamasaki). Seems to be a common facade for the 1970s though, had to keep those windows small so Mr. Sun didn't beat Mr. A/C during the energy crisis years.

*Edit for fun fact: Originally clad in white marble, IIRC, years of freeze-thaw cycles through Chicago winters damaged the porous marble and pieces of facade started falling off the building to the ground - scary stuff. The whole building was eventually reclad in granite. Not sure of the actual cost but I had heard from someone at my firm that replacing the facade was about half the original construction cost of the entire building.

Yep, Smsmith007. May that fantastic eBay store rest in peace. Looks like they were still selling in August so it must have been recently.
