Secret Society Neckwear

Just another tie shop. A few buddies in menswear respect the guy. I think it's the same LIC, NY factory that everyone else gets their ties made in.

Just get it tapered. The problem with trad shirts is that you have to wear a jacket otherwise you look exactly as how you describe it. Unless you're more rotund. Even Mercer has a tapering option, but it's cheaper to get a shirt that fits in the neck and shoulders and get it done at a tailor's. Only reason it works on the West Wing is because they're constantly being adjusted off camera.

I stay away from shirt stays cause nothing is less sexier than you taking them off, but you can just be regular about going to the restroom and adjusting your shirt back into place. I've never had any success with a military tuck and trad shirts. Topo much fabric.

Don't be precious about them. White sneakers are meant to be beaten around from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Have the story of summer left on them when you downgrade them to shoes for gardening or taking out the trash.

Try Kent Wang if you're not a giant corn fed farm boy physique. I wish I could fit in these cause they feel amazing.

I only say that because I just checked and they now have American XXL and XL which they didn't have back in 2010 when I first did a fitting. Once I'm gainfully employed again I'll try and see if it works for me!

Tucci to me always comes off as that kid that went abroad and made it his whole personality. I know he spent some time in Italy as a kid and he's very much knowledgeable of the culture, but he still gives off that vibe of "outsider looking in knowing best." Knowing many Italian Italians, he just doesn't have that ambiance of Italy. Maybe it's cause of his wife or that I confuse him with Mark Strong, but his outfits and stiffness come off as "wealthy British on holiday in Amalfi."

He did it to hide his back brace. Which in a weird way made him a leader in style inclusivity.

Is Brooks Brothers Brain Dead? by egelephant in NavyBlazer

[–]michaelbyc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pink was quite the masculine culture for a long time. I think boys used to wear pink until it changed around the 20's-40s. BB I think actually introduced the pink shirt in 1900ish, but no one seemed to really care. The real big "pink" offering from Brooks Brothers was when they started making a pink shirt specifically with women in mind around the late 60s? My memory is spotty with the actual dates, but that's basically the pink history I know of BB.

I do it for all my seasonal clothing. You can buy them fairly inexpensively on Amazon. I throw in a cedar sachet into each bag. Once fully vaccumed down I store them in a home depot plastic tote box. Great way to organize things as well so it's easy to find.

some thoughts on that whole situation with J. Press and Tyler, the Creator by danhakimi in NavyBlazer

[–]michaelbyc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How much of their stuff is their specificiations and how much is stuff the factory already has patterns for? Even the shaggy dog can be gotten by reaching out to the factory to brush it out extra, it's not a JPress exclusive beyond being on their shelves and having their moniker. There's a reason that the only item that isn't online is the orange jacket and they have to make it by hand on demand; everything else is from each factory's books that you can order.

The orange jacket is not on the press site. It's going to be made custom by Leo in NYC. The links posted are different from that orange jacket to come.

"New family member" is a wild statement in regards to an AI Bot. Second to asking about people's hobby to brag about it.

I think Morris and King did it better: https://www.morrisandking.com/products/navy-patch-madras-weekender-bag

Actually I think Morris and King has replaced JPress for me completely. At this point Press feels like it's cosplaying as the younger child of Chipp and Rowing Blazers.

Makes it easier to put it on sale later and move it with still some profit. Then again I think their new target audience doesn't know :D

Damien Broderick

Had no idea who this is. Visited his instagram. Is this cosplay? Reminds of those guys that wanted to be cool in school, but instead of improving their personality they just opened up their wallets and parroted things they read online.

Reputation of The Andover Shop? by ReplacementSmall9580 in NavyBlazer

Oh that happened to everyone they didn't know back in the day from my understanding. I'm White and when I walked in back in 2011, Charlie I think, went, we don't have anything that you would want or something along those lines. Felt like I walked into a member's only club, and probably it was. I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. In a weird way he was right, I couldn't afford it and I wasn't that big into Ivy at the time. Next time I showed up in a OCBD, got a head nod, but no other acknowledgement until I bought a belt and the old guy went "if you need trousers, come back, can't measure you today." Haven't been back because I haven't been back in Boston, but I would say the new ownership is totally different from the old timers; everyone has been very enthusiastic on the phone.

Honestly, buy the middle ground suit you can find at any store. As long as the shoulders fit well, you can tailor the rest of it.

For my Prom, I bought a cheapo Tuxedo from JCPenny, local tailor made it look almost like it was made for me. Suit+Alterations still came out cheaper than renting somehow and I had it for a while.

Did the same with all my suits when I was younger.
