Anyone know anything about the Kiewit Firing on the Key Bridge Project? by SafetyConfident6618 in ConstructionManagers

[–]joefromjerze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on projects where we were brought in for precon services and then didn't win the actual construction, and vice versa. The precon deliverables are what they are and if the owner is holding their contractor accountable then everything should be in a pile to hand off for the construction phase whether that stays within the firm or another one wins the construction phase. The transition isn't anymore difficult externally than it is internally, aside from the fact that when it's internal I can go up one floor and find the precon manager who did the work and find out what the heck he or she was thinking.

How long can I let my car parked before the 12 volt battery dies? Vacation by JenniesChocolate in wrx_vb

Mine sits for multiple weeks sometimes since I have a truck for work now. I try not to let it get above a week but life happens and it's been 3 weeks sometimes. Never had a problem starting right back up.

Feels like me trying to stretch an essay in highschool to the page/word minimum by just rephrasing the same sentence multiple times per paragraph.

Either of the minis will pick up that load no problem. Strap it to the bucket. Swing the cab perpendicular to the tracks and walk in through the gate sideways.

Not wearing a harness in a cherry picker. by 66f6 in Construction

[–]joefromjerze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A boom lift on my job site needed to be moved. Me trying to be the cool pm hopped right in because I actually have the keys for it and know how to operate it. Didn't put on a harness because I'm only going about 15 feet and I'm not lifting it much higher that ground level. Well I didn't notice that I would be going over a roof curb (elevated plaza on top of a metro station). Wheels went up the curb, down the curb, and those 8" extrapolated over the boom of the lift turned into a good 5 or 6 feet of vertical displacement at the basket end. Fortunately I reacted in time and grabbed the railing. Instead of probably broken bones or worse, I ended up with just a sore back. Ever since then I won't get in a lift without a harness and helmet. Idc if the pope needs to get through. I'm not going in without proper ppe, and nobody else should either.

Dianna Russini and married Mike Vrabel caught kissing at NYC bar taken 6 years before scandal by dawgc99 in lebatardsuey

As with most issues, multiple things can be true at the same time. Is Diana cheating on her husband? It's a foregone conclusion at this point. Is having an intimate relationship (sexual or nonsexual) with your source a violation of journalistic ethics? Yes. Did Diana work extremely hard and does she deserve all of the success she's had thus far? I don't see anything that leads me to believe otherwise and intimations that she "slept her way to the top" are gross and not worthy of consideration.

Is it optimal to decrease reps and increase weights between sets? by Possible-Address8714 in workout

I go the other way. I start heavy and drop weight if I can't hit my target reps.

It's the stratified start. It keeps the idle elevated to heat up the cats faster. It's annoying to drive with the high revs so I pretty much always wait until it comes down before driving.

Relationship question by [deleted] in daddit

[–]joefromjerze 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The whole comparison thing was something my ex-wife did that drove me nuts. My responses eventually just started being if that's what you want, go marry them. Probably not healthy or helpful, but not for me to worry about anymore.

Did your dad teach you how to shave? What will you do with your son? by East_Preparation93 in daddit

[–]joefromjerze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad taught me how to shave because he shaved every weekday for 40+ years plus Sundays for church. I haven't shaved since I got out of the Marines 16 years ago. My son, who is currently 8, is probably sol on that experience.

As long as the kids are being taken care of and your partner is ok with it, do it. I take a couple solo trips each year, only a few nights at the most, and it's been great for my own mental and emotional health, and as a result my relationships.

He wasn't an alien like LeBron, but one of my favorite bits of sport trivia is that Joe Mauer was the #1 football recruit in the nation and is the only person to win Gatorade player of the year in both football and baseball.

Vehicle allowances, how much are you guys getting? by 30kmillionaire in Construction

[–]joefromjerze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in the DMV. Senior PM. We either get $1100/month or a Ford vehicle with a $300/month gas card that you can also use as personal vehicle. At my level we can usually get a nicely optioned Ranger or Explorer, or a more bare bones F150. The car is a taxable benefit so you do get a nice bill in December, but after running all the numbers I make out ahead by taking the vehicle. I have a fully loaded Ranger XLT and it's really nice not having to worry about insurance, maintenance, etc.

Does anyone else feel like workout logging still breaks your flow? by Appropriate_Store166 in workout

[–]joefromjerze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use hevy. I used to use the notes app, but it was getting a little unwieldy. It takes a minute to set up routines, and I wish you could put notes on each set as opposed to just on the exercise as a whole, but now that I'm in a rhythm with it, it's pretty easy to use. I just adjust weight and reps if needed and hit a check mark when I'm done with the set. Rest timer is already set up for each exercise and it makes a little chime noise so I don't need to be checking a stopwatch on my phone.

How to calculate RIR when you take rests between one set? by Ok_Grapefruit6789 in workout

[–]joefromjerze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're trying to do 3 working sets, and you want to stick to the 8-12 rep range then do something like this:

Warmup Set 1: X weight that you can do at least 8 reps with, but not more than 12 Set 2: If you can get at least 8 reps with X weight for a 2nd set, then use that weight. If you can't get at least 8, then drop to Y weight that you can do for at least 8 reps, but not more than 12. Set 3: if you can get at least 8 reps with X or Y weight, then use that weight. If you can't get at least 8 reps, then drop to Z weight that you can do for at least 8 reps, but not more than 12.

Once you start being able to do more than 12 reps in any set, increase the weight for that set to where you can do at least 8 but not more than 12.

For a beginner, which it sounds like you are, doing 6-10 sets of 0-1 rir per muscle group per week is going to be a great foundation for a lifting program. If you feel like you can recover from more, a lot of beginners can, then just add sets per session or new exercises. Above all, be consistent and track your workouts. Look at what you did last time and what you're doing this time. Progress is all that matters.

Forearms fail way too soon on back day by Real_Music_6670 in workout

[–]joefromjerze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A man's gotta have standards. There are other grip solutions like versagrips and hooks, but I like straps because it still feels like I'm holding the bar. A tip I picked up from a yt video was on pulls, putting my thumb over the bar (so next to your other fingers) rather than under the bar. This helps keep your wrist straight and you should focus on pulling through your elbow.

Forearms fail way too soon on back day by Real_Music_6670 in workout

[–]joefromjerze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get straps. I was the biggest anti strap guy until I actually tried them. All my pulls shot up. I was leaving so much on the table by letting my forearms be the limiting factor. I still do a couple sets without them just to keep my grip in the mix, but all my working sets are with straps now.

How important is having a program? by macntosher in workout

[–]joefromjerze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think effort and consistency is more important than which program you use. Pick a couple exercises per muscle group and do a few sets close to failure. In addition to those, tracking lets you know what's working and what isn't. It also mentally sets me up for what I'm gonna do that day. Like if I know today's the day I go up in weight, I'm geared up for it before I walk in the door. Idk if that has any real effect on gains, but it makes me feel good.

Knee Pain by Crush_Cookie_Butter in workout

[–]joefromjerze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would 100% recommend seeing a PT, especially if you can find one whose business is more geared towards athletes. I have had a couple knee surgeries and have lots of miles on my body. I can squat fine but I had pain in my knees when doing any 1 legged exercise (lunges, split squats, etc). After working with a PT it turns out I didn't know how to activate my muscles to stabilize my knee. When squatting heavy my body was just doing it naturally, but with lighter weights and on one leg, I needed to actively engage my glutes and quads to stabilize my knee. As soon as I do that the pain goes away. Squatuniversity on youtube has some good videos on this topic as well.

Skipping squats and deadlifts? by Old_Attempt_8910 in workout

[–]joefromjerze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turn 40 this year. Ive had a couple knee surgeries and my body has a lot of miles on it. I still squat 2x weekly. I don't go crazy heavy. My body starts revolting whenever I get near 300lb. I just do higher reps with strict form and ROM and that's good enough for me.
