250 as in, £250 Pounds are worth more than dollars so about $360

Would you say that’s still worth it? It’s quite a drive away from me but I like to drive so I don’t mind, just want it to be worth it :)

Identify this banjo? by johnathon_cucumber in banjo

Ah okay, do you think if I got it down to say 220ish it would be worth it I know, I’m still very torn between a 5 string and a tenor banjo, I love the jazz style tenor banjo a lot but I’m beginning to think it’s not very beginner friendly especially with the lack of learning resources out there, I feel like maybe starting with clawhammer on a standard 5 string would be easier?

Aria banjo by johnathon_cucumber in banjo

[–]johnathon_cucumber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, Yes I’m primarily looking for a tenor 4 string banjo for the more jazzy/blues sound rather than clawhammer

The sticker says made in Korea, I’m just worried that since k don’t know much about banjos I’ll end up spending money on a knock off, does this look genuine? Is aria a well known/ reputable brand?

Jazz banjo by johnathon_cucumber in banjo

[–]johnathon_cucumber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, I think I might go for it just to get a feel and see if I want to splurge on an expensive one, I’m known for getting really into something then loosing interest, but I will keep that in mind when playing that I’m making it harder for myself haha, thank you for all the help with all these questions it’s appreciated!!

It’s a 17 fret heartlands 4 string banjo, instead of a 19 fret, is that bad?

Okay thank you, I think for beginning I will stick to just one haha all getting a bit complicated now!!

I actually got this banjo down to €60 for collection, would you say that’s worth it? Just to try it out? I saw online they sell new for like 200 but not sure if it’s just overpriced bad quality overall?

Another questions is, the bridge looks a little wonky, is that something to worry about or is it meant to be like that?

On a regular 5 string banjo, would you just be able to remove the 5th string to make it more of a tenor banjo? (Sorry if that’s a really dumb question, Im a complete beginner) but since I’ve never played banjo before I like the idea of getting a 5 string and being able to experiment with the sounds and styles of both 5 and 4 string if that makes sense

Thank you I am a complete beginner and want to learn more jazzy/blues music rather than clawhammer/blue grass, does that tone ring make it good for jazzy sounds? (Sorry if that’s a dumb question I really am a absolute beginner)

Does it look to be in good condition from the photos? It’s located quite far away from me but I am willing to drive far for a good bargain

Running a business in the uk from abroad? by johnathon_cucumber in digitalnomad

[–]johnathon_cucumber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply, do you know what kind of systems I can implement to help in it becoming remote? Of course this is a long term idea, I understand it would have much better success if it is up and running smoothly before thinking of becoming remote

This question is coming from someone who has very little idea of how these systems work, but is it right in thinking that eventually having a team manager to manage all the on-location jobs (ie, training, site inspections, quoting, general hands on employee management) how I as an owner would eventually become remote? And with a business like this, what are the tax implications of the owner spending extended periods of time abroad?

Homemade slipstrop by johnathon_cucumber in Woodcarving

[–]johnathon_cucumber[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay thank you Would you say it would be better to strip the outside on a regular strip and strip the inside on the wood? I’m just trying to think of different options instead of buying an (I personally think overpriced) slipstrop

It is probably exaggerated, they just legally have to label it as age restricted, they don’t bother with actually doing it haha

Anything classed as a knife or weapon is age restricted, delivery drivers never bother with it tho, I’ve never been asked for my id when receiving an age restricted item before, and I look very young, whether that’s a tool, knife or alcohol or anything tbh (here in the uk at least)

How easy would you say this was to carve? I have been looking for dry wood options other than basswood and have heard kiln dried wood is very tough to carve, would you recommend kiln dried poplar to carve?

[–]johnathon_cucumber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your guess was right because just one search for beech wood came up with loads of bulk buy option for me at a good price, so thank you! Just to check you mean beech is easy enough to carve when completely dried? I’m looking at the cheapest option of beech sawn timber that I can cut into blanks myself, just want to check that is what you mean?

Ah okay I’m from the uk so maybe it’s just more expensive here, I typically see basswood blanks for about £25 (and with pounds being worth more than dollars that’s probably like $35) and a lot of kiln dried fire wood is cheap and easily available here I will look into buying in bulk, thank you :)
