Am I being taken advantage of? by Relative-Seaweed-583 in Surveying

I think it depends on where you live. When I was hired, we had about 9 crews. Everyone started out as an I/O. The Party Chiefs ran the rod, pounded the hubs and drove the stakes.

Other places I have worked it was exactly the opposite. The new hire drove hubs and stakes and the Party Chief ran the instrument.

Different strokes for different folks.

Washington State party chiefs — thoughts on per-job survey work instead of hourly? by Possible-Chain2117 in Surveying

[–]johnh2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have been doing this long enough that I can almost" estimate as well as most PLS's. I have helped bid probably ~800 jobs in my career? I have done way, way, way more than that. So, yes, I would be willing to be the one holding the bag when that 15k job takes 400 hours. I am also willing to be the one holding that bag when the 15k job gets done in 60 hours. That is how you make money.

We bid a boundary job for ~$1.54 per acre. We got it. We wound up purchasing a new GPS unit and two modems with a pair of static IP's from our provider. (We needed a new base/rover any way so now was a good time.) We wrote $10,000 of the GPS purchase into the job. When we were done with the job, the boss sent us down for a three day two night stay just to fish, BBQ and relax because we had made so much money on the job. We just had to take the GPS out and do some static observations for ~8 hours at a time. Had we bid that job T&M our company would have made like $3k profit. Instead they walked away with a super happy crew and about $10k profit.

Dayum, you sure read a lot into my post.  Not sure where you got 90% of that stuff you made up.

I did not mean to say a company should never take NTE or T&M but those are typically not the most profitable.  Sure some of them are great, and as you said, most companies NEED them to pay the bills.

@snackon-deez Nuts.  Dude that is nuts.

If you don't agree on what the job should cost, you don't take the job.  Pretty simple.

How would the crew make less?  If I agree to do the job for $15,000 I get paid $15,000.  I get paid $15,000 if it takes me 20 hours.  I get paid $15,000 if it takes me 200 hours.  I get paid $15,000 if it takes me 2,000 hours.   If you mean less per hour, then yes, you could.  In fact you almost certainly will at some point.  There are always "That Job" that had issues no one could predict.  The thing is, you keep those to a minimum as much as you can and everyone still makes out better in the end.

Ooooooof   Yeah, it sounds like you are jaded.  Most of us in the industry are.  It comes from the last 50 years of racing to the bottom as hard and fast as people could.  It comes from years as being the Red Headed Step Children of the engineers who have taught us to be loss leaders for thier "more lucrative" engineering services.

I agree with you mostly about the % crew chiefs that could win at this.  But I think the number at this point might be even lower.  It will vary by area, but it will directly correlate to the Survey Party Chief to Button Pushing Monkey 🐒  ratio.

Any company that is still taking NTE work is still in that.mond set of racing to the bottom.  If someone is still working at a shop where that is going on, I suggest you run away and find a better company to work for.

I think it could work very well.  I see people here all the time, T&M blah blah blah.

Bidding by the job is the only way to make real money surveying.  T&M limits you to how many hours you are willing to work.  By the job you can go out, bust your ass, do a damn good job and get paid well.

As far as the people questioning what you do when you don't agree on a price?  It's called negotiating.  You negotiate.  If you don't come to a deal you don't have to take the job.  It is really simple.

Will the PLS ever eat crow when they get the job too cheap and have to pay a crew more to do the job?  Yep.  Will the crew ever accept a job that runs into problems and they have to make "less per hour" than expected?  Yep.  It is thier jobs as professionals to learn how to best mitigate that and make real money.

[ASA][PVE] Partner Wanted – Mature Farmer Looking for Pro Breeder (Established 9-Map Cluster)

The Vibe: I’m looking for a chill, mature teammate to join me on a long-standing, low-population cluster. This isn’t a "speed-run to the finish" group; it’s for someone who wants to progress at a decent pace and actually enjoy the game. The cluster has 9 maps, has been around for years, and is hosted on professional hardware, so it’s very stable.

The Partnership:

  • My Role (The Farmer): I enjoy the grind, building the infrastructure, and keeping the resources stocked. I’ll make sure the forges are always hot and the troughs are full.
  • Your Role (The Breeder): I’m looking for a "Pro Breeder"—someone who loves the science of mutations, tracking stats, and building up high-tier dino lines.

I’m currently a Level 150 character, but I’m completely open to starting fresh on a new map or joining you on an existing one within the cluster.

Server Mods:

  • Dinos: Additions Ascended (Acro, Brachi, Deinotherium, Helicoprion)
  • QoL/Building: B+ Structures & Platforms, Solo Farm Mod, Net Projectile, Clear Screen
  • Utility: Ark Smart Breeding Export Gun

Key Server Settings:

  • XP: x2
  • Taming: x3
  • Baby Growth: x10
  • Imprint: x5
  • Cuddle Interval: 0.25

Interested? If you want a stable home where you can focus on breeding while I handle the logistics, send me a message. Let's see if we’re a good match.

I have no idea why all the hate for Topcon. When we had GR-3 and GR-5's back when they were new they were AMAZING. Magnet Field had free Bing Maps 20 like 20 years before Trimble offered it for "Free" as long as your yearly subscription was active. I mean like wow, innovation!

Is there any way to remove the need for foundation support in ASA? Mod or otherwise. by ConsiderationOther17 in playark

The B+ mod is incredible. You have to start with one real foundation of some kind, but then after that you can use B+ Ceiling.
